The Daughters First Shoot with the Savage Mk2

Post by bigfellascott »

G'day Fella's,

The Daughter recently got her Juniors Permit after doing the test a mth or so back, all went well and no issues there, anyway we have been waiting for an opportunity to get out to the local range and give her her first go with the little 2nd Hand Savage Mk2 I bought recently off a member here.

Seems like she can shoot it well (the bunnies are in some trouble for sure) :boogie: All shooting done off a bench using a fixed 6-9" Harris up front and Sandbag at the rear. Weather was ok with some wind gusts starting up over the session but no real dramas in that regard.

We tried around 5-6 diff types of ammo and it shot them all well (plenty good enough to put holes in bunny heads no worries at all (the groups below are from the diff types of ammo), only one which was a bit ordinary was some Winchester Z22 ammo which is super low velocity which would still roll bunnies group wise but was around 8" low from POA at 50m! not that that can't be sorted with a quick tweak of the turrets (it was funny watching the projectile fly through the air ;)

Anyway all shooting was done at 50m - we had a fun day out and were the only 2 shooting there so the range was all ours!. Needless to say she was really happy with the way she shot and now all we have to do is find some bunnies for her to roll!

Rifle is a Savage Mk2 Varmint sitting in a Boyds Thumbhole Stock and wearing a little ol Jap 6x Tasco in Warne Rings.

Hi Scott,

Good stuff mate. What ammo shot best? CCI SV used to shoot well for me when I had a BVMK2 (around 15-20mm groups) but SK Rifle Match would go under 12mm.

Hope the lass continues to enjoy.

cheers, curan

Hi Curan, it likes the CCi SV alright as do most of em from what I've been reading, it also likes the SK Match too, the previous owner used to use this for his competition rifle and has shot some fantastic groups with both those brands of ammo.

Thanks for that Missed, I probably would have come this year only I didn't realise what it was until too late! I haven't done any long range shooting other than the very occasional shot at a bit of fur so it would be good to find out what its all about.

Hopefully the Daughter and I will be able to get out Wednesday for a bit of Bunny harvesting - fingers crossed.

I'll definitely come this time Missathon if funds permit.

Thanks mate, she certainly surprised me with how well she went I can tell ya. I guess she has been paying attention after all  Now all I have to do is wait for the youngest 1 to turn 12 and she will have her license (she's already counting the days!!) has been for the last couple of years at least. (she's already claimed the Brno Mod 2 as her's)!

Cheers mate
