Dirty useless remington

Was given a stock 7mm rem mag in sendero to try and work out why it wouldn't shoot.
First few groups were disheartening. The bloke when questioned said it was broken in .
So I asked when did it stop copper fouling?
answer: What, what's that.
A fair while later and a lot of pretty patches, bit like Missed lost copper mine, I had something to work with.
Tried the loads again

To the left is the last group pre cleaning and the right is first group after one fouler.
Got four more very close to that.
I now own the rifle,

But Glen it is a factory rifle they do not require running in thats only for target rifles remember.

I would say that was a good pick up Macca I hope you got it for less than the 3 grand that one on used guns was.

I actually swapped him a sendero in 270win that does shoot nearly as well.
I leant my brother my switch barrel one and he wants to buy it so this was timely.
The factory barrel is great but gets hot way quicker then my axel. She put each three shot group under .3 but add two more shots and it's .5 or more.
Blooded it on a small pig today. 162 amax did the job.

At the cost of looking like an idiot here, does copper fouling stop?.
I have not long had my tikka and followed the breaking in procedure as directed by the gun shop, which from memory was 1 round clean with hoppes patch out then clean with sweets to remove copper. Do this three times then repeat firing three rounds three times. They recommend this as the usual cleaning process. I read in this post the comment above "So I asked when did it stop copper fouling?" Does copper fouling stop? Or am I taking an unnecessary step in cleaning by using hoppes then sweets after every time I shoot? I probably should have started a new post but wanted to jump on that comment.

How people clean there rifles is as individual as every one here, every one has there own way of doing it and I've found I can always learn something

Copper fouling dose not stop as much as not build up as fast and as quick. From what I've picked up its all about getting and keeping the barrel as smooth and clean as possible particularly when it's new then it is easier to clean as less copper is able collect and build up.

I recently got the opportunity to have a look in my 22250 barrel with a bore scope, the copper build up was amazing. My cleaning of this barrel was not up to scratch.I got given a tip to use break and parts cleaner between cleaning out the powder residue and using the solvent. The ideas is the break cleaner gets all the oil residue out so the solvent can get to the copper. It works well cleans up oil and residues a treat.

What your doing sounds pretty much the same as what I do, the hope's is very mild and good for getting the powder residue out then ounce that's out the sweets is able to get at the copper.

The cleaning instructions I was given also said that the sweets should froth up slightly. That has never happened and I have never really pushed through any blue patches from copper. Not sure if this is good or bad as in a) there is no real copper build up as yet or b) I am not cleaning properly.

How long are you leaving the sweets in the barrel, I bought chamber plugs for most of my rifles and leave the sweets in for up to 24 hours before patching out. In the cat killer and the 280 I get bugger all copper, but these are hand lapped barrels. In the 30-06 factory barrel I get a bit more but nothing excessive.

I'm leaving the sweets in for about 20 mins which is what the instructions said. should I leave in longer or am I to believe it is clean?

People will tell you sweets will eat you barrel if it's left to long, I am not to sure, these barrels will be shot out far quicker than it would take for sweets to be an issue.

Most of my cleaning (ie after every session shooting) I just let the sweets slack for about 30 min or so. Every couple of months though I will give them the full clean, and this involves the full soak treatment. So far so good and when I need to rebarrel I will get the smith to cut them open to see how effective it's been.

I also use butch's but this can be left in for quite a while, I have left rifles to soak for over a week when I was short of time and heading out of town for a bit. This seems to work as well
