I was just surfing a few gun related sites and read a topic about peoples experiences with people that turn up @ ranges and go about making complete gooses of themselves.
I was wondering if anyone had any stories we would get a bit of a laugh out of.
An example of one of these yankee stories was a bloke was at his local range and was shooting at a target a few hundred yards away and after he had got his rifle dialled in he decided to give the local praire dog population a touch up that were located next to the target mound.
While he was shooting a bloke aproached and asked if he could spot for him and he agreed, upon firing a shot the observer gave a bit of a giggle and said mate you are way of you missed the target by three feet right and two feet low but you hit a PD that was sitting there, needless to say the shooter just held his breath and walked away.
this is just one type of story, but do you have or know of any incidents or evnts that have stuck in your mind.
there must be a few yarns about how far some claim to have shot something but could not even hit the target at shorter ranges, and then there are the blokes that claim to have all the knowledge but dont even own a rifle just show up and float about.

Well, really BS stories other than funny...
Here you go... at the range talking to a fella who had just aquired a new Sako TRG in 308. Went on how nice a rifle it was, which was no lie as they are nice. Had mounted on it a nice fixed power Kahl's.
I became a little sceptical when he said that he could pretty consistantly hit a computer screen sized target as 1000yds, using off the shelf match ammo. Ok, 308..... struggling out there at 1000yds, give him teh benefit of the doubt.... could have happened int he one time he tried it....
BUT NO...
Using the scope and the base which he had, he could not get enough elevation out to 1000yds. Also, a computer screen target with a fixed 10X is getting a little under powered!
Each time I take a bench gun to range, only on retard Sunday, I often hear how their nice littl sporter rifle shoots groups like, if not better than a fully fledged target rifle!
Thats a couple to think of straight up!

Had a bloke turn up to the range with a 303 one day. Everything seemed ok he checked in with the RO etc. Set his kit up on a bench then shot his first round ...
Next thing I hear is the whack, whack, whack of a lump of timber being used to open the bolt on the 303. Well bit of a hot load I thinks ... it does happen and back to my own business.
Next thing bang goes the 303 again then whack, whack, whack again .. this goes on for a few shots when the RO who had gone and had a chat to our visitor comes over and asks me to look at a case.
My interest well and truly piqued I agree and he hands me 2 x 303 cases ... I look them over and noticed a substance around the primer.
I says to the RO "whats that ?" he says " I was hoping you'd know"
So over to ol' mate we go. How you doing sport I said .. he says good mate as whacks the bolt out again.
I say I think you have some sort of problem there mate. He says what do you mean. I point out that the lump of wood isnt standard issue for bolt extraction.
And by the way whats this around the primer ... oh thats araldite he says ... What ?? araldite he says again.
I foolishly ask whats he doing with aralidte in the primer pocket he says
it stops the primers falling out.
Turned out he had collected a heap of old cases that had been tossed out and was using the aralidte to hold the primers into primer pockets that had become oversized from use.
Further examination of his unfired ammo showed that arildite also sealed cracks in cases necks and stopped powder getting out. Further he did not have any scales and measured his powder charge by eye and but had no idea about what powder it was.
Its funny now but was bloody dangerous at the time.

G'Day All,
I do remember one chap who had a 22 mag and was shooting at a target at 300yds..........We suggested perhaps a suitable range of 100 but was told politely to mind our own business as this was what he was told the rifle cas capable of.
I dont think his target had any holes in it and he could have got a refund at the end of the day I suppose.....

There are a number of people on this forum that will know of the guy i speak of.
One day we were all shooting silhouette and one of our regulars was having trouble extracting cases out of his Mauser 96 in 6.5x55. Anyway after a while one of my mates asked the guy what the problem was as he had earlier in the week sugggested that he reload with 2206. Fillhimup, as he is known to this day after this incident, replied that he had indeed taken his advise on the 2206 and felt that the loads might be just a little hot. Me mate asked Fillhimup how many grains had he used in his loads . Fillhimup replied that he didn't know for sure but said he had trouble pulling the pills free of the PMC factory loads because of the crimp used. On further investigation it was discovered that what in actual fact had happened was that Fillhimup had pulled the PMC factory projectile from the loaded cartridges and filled the remaining air space with 2206. So his loads were the full factory powder charge plus about an extra 10 grains of 2206. The primers needless to say looked like five cent coins in diameter and the cases had flowed their heads into the bolt face recess but were still able to be extracted. Never let it be said that a Mauser 96 is a weak action. Fillhimup doesn't shoot no more. Let's all be thankfull.

Ahhh Fillimup 
I recall standing behind old mate and watching him shoot that damn Swede and not hit anything.... After one particular shot a black haze appeared 20 feet in front of his muzzle. Qty one 139gr PMC pill coming to pieces in flight
No wonder he wasnt hitting anything!
Also remember some bloke lobbing with a 94 30/30 claiming to be able to hit pigs at 500 yards with the damn thing. Far from impressed when Tony Z asked him how he threw the fucking thing that far
And a couple of likely lads from Charters Towers lobbing who had had a 300 Winnie Mag built for the fly and as it was claimed, able to "bounce a coke can around at 500" Lobbed on the 500 metre mound for the fly and asked "why we were shooting at 1000 metres"

I understand that this actually happened at the SSAA range at Silverdale. A bloke fired a rifle and the range officer noticed that it made a very odd noise. Before the bloke could fire again he asked to check the rifle and sure enough there was a bullet stuck about three inches in from the muzzle. His load was 26 grains of 2206 in a 223---that's right, 26 individual grains carefully placed in there.
