Guys, thanks for all the suggestions!
After reading all the things that you guys have said I'm tossing up between two options.....
1, 7600 rebarrelled to 358win (After I have shot the shit out of the 308 barrel) with a couple of 10 shot mags in the pockets and a red dot/low power scope ie: 1.5-5 weaver grand slam
2, A T3 Battue light in 338 fed (factory chambering) with a couple of 10 shot mags in the pockets and a red dot/low power scope ie: 1.5-5 weaver grand slam on QD mounts so I can still use the open sites if need be.
Now for a couple of questions......
Who makes the highest capacity mags for the 7600 that feed reliably?
Which cal has the least brass prep out of the two I have mentioned? Or are the the same just being necked up 308 cases?
Again thanks again guys you have made a lot of sense!
Cheers BB

Oh well, looks like you didn't fry, that's a bonus.
Why would you worry about brass prep if you are going to blat them out of a couple of scrub guns, you'll loose a hell of a lot more than you pick up. For cheap brass, just run 308 brass through a full length die with tapered expander, redding does them. If you use factory, just buy them blatt, them and forget about reloading

Re: Ultimate territory gun
I'm going to be a little contrary and agree with the gents on page 1. I don't like the balance of the 7600 rifles - complete and utter shite balance IMHO. Noisy bloody things too.
If it were me, I would go with a Browning BLR Lightweight Stainless Takedown with the straight grip stock in 358 Winchester.
Yes, they are available in this cartridge, but the rifle will be a special order as Winchester Australia don't seem to carry them as a stock item.

When taken down, the whole rifle can be fitted in a Go Bag.
I would top it with a Leupold VX2 1-4 on top (or a VX-R Hog).

Re: Ultimate territory gun
mmm BLR looks nice, maybe one day.
Can't you stuff a Whelen in one as well?? A decent energy upgrade over the 358 win. Don't you already have a 30-06 or is it a 308?
Either way cheap brass as said above and both the 358's are easy to form like camel mentioned.

Re: Ultimate territory gun
But if going the T3 (which would be my recommendation) as you can get 8 shot black arsenal mags in 30/06 length actions I would get either a 9.3 or a 338Fed (mind you noone makes 338fed brass that I'm aware of since Federal stopped selling UP Brass)

Re: Ultimate territory gun
That BLR in 325WSM sounds like a hell of a killer to me. The only problem I see is the magazine, a standard one would probably only hold 3 rounds. Or are there aftermarket ones available that I don't know of?

BB Ogre used a 338 federal on our Camel trip. Camel and brumby fell over.

They never do, but they will special order them.kjd wrote:They don't have any 358Wins but they do have 325WSM in stock $1765
The 325 WSM might be a good choice in some limited circumstances, but IMHO the 338 Fed or 358 Win are better all round cartridges simply because they recoil less. Fast follow up shots are directly related to how fast you can recover the sight picture.
Oh, and 325 is only 3 in the mag, 358 is 4.

Re: Ultimate territory gun
To qualify my original comment recommending the BLR. I have had one in 7mmRemMag for 19 years and it has operated without fault. It's a bit on the heavy side (it nearly drowned me in Big River while walking hounds across), it does have a long barrel and the magazine only holds three rounds. But when a quick follow up is needed, it's fast and that weight I mentioned earlier calms down the recoil. I often think of selling it but I never do. Why? Cos it has never let me down. It's one of those guns, it's not your goto for regular hunting, but when the goings tough it's always there.
