Factory ammo - split case
After a recent trip to the range I was separating out fired rounds from the unfired (box by box), and decided to compare unfired with fired round. Upon opening a new box of unfired rounds I came across a split case neck. In the same box I also found a dinged case.
Not being an expert on ammo (or reloading) would you consider the following rounds safe to use or not? Specifically, what's the likely and/or worst case result if I use them.
As much as it annoys me (not cheap ammo) I'll probably discard them. Probably not worth a trip back to the LGS to complain...
I won't name the brand (yet) but I'll take guesses

The dented one will be fine, it will just form to the chamber when fired. The split one, however, I would be discarding.

I'll skip using the split case, it's just not worth the risk.
No, it's neither Federal or Winchester. Never tried Winchester but i do use Federal. I have no complaints with the Federal.

Based on the tarnish on the brass alone its Remington. Ditch the split one, my opinion is the same as everyone else's. I'm incapable of original thought.
Re: Factory ammo - split case
I am with sam in guessing remington. I would actually fire that one though. Maybe not in my custom bench gun but in my hunting rifle yeah. I would also not give anybody that did not want to fire it a hard time either.

Factory ammo - split case
Good guess, it is Remington core-lokt. The box maybe upto 3 years old but was unopened until today.
This may be a silly question but... If I pull the projectile and dump the powder am I able to fire the primer without issues? I'm not keen on discarding a live round...

Re: Factory ammo - split case
Yep just pop it in and let it go, cant do any damage. Maybe fire the split one as it is, then put some photos up for us, sort of like a before and after. I don't think it would hurt to fire it like that, the split doesn't go all the way down into the shoulder. If you were out hunting and jumped a mob of pigs and it was in the middle of a mag full, I very much doubt you would know the difference.

I figured it couldn't hurt to fire a primer.
Not sure about a before and after pic of firing a split case. It would probably shoot fine but then again....is it worth the risk?

I have fired empty cases with just primers while testing a firing pin prob, no issues at all. We had a rag over the end so it was not so noisy.

I gotta ask........did the rag bust into flame so you could light your campfire from it?stinkitup wrote:I have fired empty cases with just primers while testing a firing pin prob, no issues at all. We had a rag over the end so it was not so noisy.

Re: Factory ammo - split case
Just to follow up on this two year old post...
The dented round was fired no problem, as was the split neck.
I didn't realise it was "THAT" box when I grabbed it out of the safe for a trip to the range a few months back. Only noticed when inspecting the case after firing.
The split neck opened up fractionally (compared to the original pic) but nothing significant...luckily.
Well that answers that question...
