Can't get enough scope adjustment

Post by birdnesta »

:( Well I took My new sako 85 with zeiss scope mounted in optilock rings and bases out for it's maiden voyage today and bloody hell, I only had just enough elevation adjustment to allow me to get it to shoot 1'' high at 100. I cant zero it any lower as the turrent is screwed as far in as it will go ! Never had this problem before , but never used optilocks before either ! I re-checked everything and it all looks good . Q. when I fitted the rear base ,I had to lightly tap It on with a mallet due to the pin that slots into recoil stop was sitting hard on top of the receiver, is that normal? Any Tips on how to get more adjustment ? Thanks

Are you running tapered mounts or rail?
Sounds like the back of your scope could be slightly elevated. whether its mounts or something else Im not sure. I've never used optilocks but I've also never had to use a mallet to mount a scope either...
i would be looking at wherever you used the mallet for the issue.

Gday Marc , They are tapered bases mate , once the rear base was tapped on the first time , it was easy to slide on after that, but wether the pin is holding the rear base up a bit maybe ? It looks to be sitting right down into the dovetails though. Cheers Brett

Trouble is that pin stop.......remove the mount and file the pin down a bit so the mount slides in easy with no resistance from the stop pin.....put it back together and your problem will be solved......

I have to agree with Harb seems your problem stems from the recoil stop.Just a light file no good using a 9" lol

Most of my Sako's about 6 have Optilock and I knock the pin out with a small pin punch this allows the base to
move all the way onto the dovetail never had any problems after that.

Well , I've ground down the pin with the dremel , refitted the plastic inserts in the rings and same result , although I did gain 3 clicks 3/4''of adjustment . Better than nothing I guess . looks like I might have to live with it eh ? any idea's ?

Puzzling problem you have there for sure. Ive not used optilocks maybe you could shim under the scope on the rear ring, I had to do that with one of my rifles, with a Conquest on it, trouble mine was printing around 4 inchs high. Couple of coke can shims and it solved the problem.

I have plastic shims cut from butter containers under the scope on the front ring of my Parker Hale. I thought the problem was the no- name bridge mount and rings so replaced with Leupold rings and bases - no change. Shims fixed the problem. It's only a .243 so I don't gorilla the rings up really tight for fear of bending the scope tube.

A better fix would be to find the appropriate spacer thickness under the front base, and use it to add a layer of glass bedding to the base of the ring base. Not really an option for dovetail- type bases like Optilocks though...

Yep as mentioned now swap the rings end for end.....if its a mount problem it will go the opposite way to what it is now.........
I sometimes have to much around swapping things around to get the best combination........it doesn't take much at the riffle to make a big difference at the target.......also be sure your ring to base screws are tight.
