Weakened and got myself a .223

Post by fenring »

I decided to get a longer range varmint / fun gun, and wanted to go with .223 for cheap ammo and versatility. After handling a few rifles at the SHOT Expo the Tikka seemed the best at my price range, so I went with a stainless lammy.

The scope showed up this morning from TOZ.  Clearidge Ultra XP 4.5-14AO and it fits in the supplied rings, nice and low.

I decided to go with the lammy stock as IMO it looks and feels more solid than the placcy version, even though I'm a fan of good placcy stocks.

Under the caps the Clearidge has target style turrets for those needing such a feature (not me).

Apparently these Clearidge scopes come from the Light Optical Works factory in Japan, where a number of other decent scopes are sourced from, including the likes of the Bushnell Elite 4200 range.  And they have a transferable lifetime warranty.  Been happy with the 3-9X32 Ultra RM on my .22 so decided to go the big mildot brother for this rifle.

This one's a 1 in 12" twist for average / lightish pills which is what I intend to use for foxes and what-not.

Cannot fault the fit and finish of the rifle, and I did look at a few others - Remmy, TC, Howa namely but to me the Tikka felt slicker and the finish just seemed better.  Yes - there are placcy bits, all of which are replaceable with metal should one want to do so.  A billet 10 shot mag might be on the list.   :D

I like the look of the laminate, what profile barrel is on it? one picture looks like a varmint and the other a sporter.

I'd say it's a sporter. You can see the barrel tapers out past the receiver.

Damn nice piece of equipment.

Good choice Fenring it looks very nice.

I am going to have a look at one of those Clearidge scope one day as they seem to get good reviews.

You will love it mate. If it is anything like mine you will be dropping red dogs as quick as a brides nightie. Mine love American eagle(made by federal) 50gn hollow points and reloading the nosler 50gn BT. But just about everything I have fed it was well inside minute of fox head if not eye.

I went for a side focus scope after I had an end twister for a couple of years. I just found it much easier to get the best, sharpest picture without messing about with shooting position. But what ever floats ya boat.

Enjoy!

Looks sweet Fenring.

I'll be very interested to hear how well the SS sporter barrel groups, once you've had a chance to play.

The T3s have been tempting me for some time.

cheers, curan
