Re: Winchester's forthcoming .17WSM
Your right there to Camel. And why not try to cash in on the popularity as well.
It will appeal to some People more than others.I still love my 17 HMR but now I have the 17 HH, this new cartridge dose not appeal to me but I am going to reload for the HH. So the price of factory 17 HH dose not bother me to much ($34.00a pack of 25 about $1.30 a pop) the 17HMR is running about $10 to $15 cheaper than that around here depends where and what brand but basically 60 cents a shot
If the Winchester is cheaper that the 17HH and only slightly more expensive than HMR it may be quite popular. Horses for courses.
It will be interesting to see what the ammo goes for here.
Sure will be a good fox round.

Re: Winchester's forthcoming .17WSM
I wonder if re-chambering existing HMR rifles would be possible?...

Re: Winchester's forthcoming .17WSM
I was informed here in SA and some one correct me if Im wrong, that the reason the 17 HMR is cat B here is due to the wording of our firearms act stating that class A is "22 Rimfe" and any thing else is class B.

Re: Winchester's forthcoming .17WSM
I think it will probably stay Cat A in Victoria, unless they want to amend the legislation, or the CCP wants to make a declaration (doubtful as a 12g shotgun with slugs is still Cat A....)
category A longarm means any of the following-
(a) an airgun;
(b) a rimfire rifle (other than a semi-automatic rimfire rifle);
(c) a shotgun (other than a pump action or semi-automatic shotgun);
(d) any combination of a shotgun and rimfire rifle;
Re: Winchester's forthcoming .17WSM
I hope so ...
we need to ask someone to do a 7.62x51 in rimfire

Re: Winchester's forthcoming .17WSM
a few years back i was going through my reg certs for my guns cos a few had mistakes, i noticed the hummer i had was Cat B. I was told by Firearms Branch it was because of the velocity the hummer produced. 17mk2 is Cat A.Flip wrote:I was informed here in SA and some one correct me if Im wrong, that the reason the 17 HMR is cat B here is due to the wording of our firearms act stating that class A is "22 Rimfe" and any thing else is class B.
this new one will definately be Cat B in south oz... but who gives a sh!t
my only problem now is do i use the 17cal Kreiger blank for a 17Honet build or go for a 17mk4? cos i'm so getting one of these!

Re: Winchester's forthcoming .17WSM
or maybe if i can get a reamer for the 17wsm the kreiger can go on an action for it... but what?
it looks like it will be really close to the 17Hornet for external dimesions...

Re: Winchester's forthcoming .17WSM
Only if you're shooting a Contender Carbine. It's too fat, too long, and generates too much pressure for typical HMR rifle, which is just a rebarrelled .22 Magnum.andrewk wrote:I wonder if re-chambering existing HMR rifles would be possible?...
To make it work, it'll have to have a Hornet-length action, like a Browning A bolt, CZ527, Ruger 77/17Hornet or the Zastava action, and THOSE would have to be converted to rimfire, magazines made, etc.
I expect to see THOSE actions in .17 Hornady Hornet, but not the rimfire, development costs for the Hornet are nil compared to the costs of reworking an action to another firing system. So far, it looks like Savage is the only one stepping up to the plate, with some bastardized version of their already bastardized M25. It's called the Model B (presumeably for Bastard )
Re: Winchester's forthcoming .17WSM
Ive got a Contender Carbine and whilst it would take the extra pressure, I'm not sure you could just rechamber it as it looks like the new case has a wider base. If it does then there could be issues with the alignment of the firing pin. Would be easier to rechamber to the 17hh as no issues with the centre fire alignment.

Re: Winchester's forthcoming .17WSM
well i've been looking at getting a CZ527 for my 17 hornet build but I might try the 17WSM with it first. If its no good ream it out the 17HH.
