First 300WM fox!
Took the 300WM out for its first run on foxes. Until this time it had 20 runds through the rifle which was quick load testing, chrony, 100m zero, 500m zero check.
The next rounds are out chasing foxes. Used prepped winchester brass, 190 Nosler CC's, Reloader 25. 24" barrel netted 2980fps with no pressure issues so happy to leave it where it is! Accuracy seems to be outstanding.
The first fox went 405m, bino's were the savour here, right place right time. Ranged, dialled in and whollop!! The 168 Nosler CC's were very disappointing out of a 308W in performance on game, but add more weight, more velocity and they are pretty nasty. The first fox photo is the 405m. The other side is blown apart!
While I was taking the photo I looked up and saw another fox sitting staring at me. Picked up the rifle, walked to a rock sat it down but he trotted off. Took the shot while he was moving, not running but a nice hussle! As you can see the shot fell a little to the rear but the damage was great. Took a big wedge out of him! Distance, 153m.
Rifle
405m fox
150m fox
So far pretty happy with the way it is going.
Cheers

Re: First 300WM fox!
one moment im thinking in my head "i dont need another rifle, im happy with what i have". then i look at your posts and fall in love with what you make. would you ever think about building a rifle for others for a small fee?

and me too Fen, first thought was Ruark......Good one AI, at the rate you successfully have custom rifles built, ever thought of taking on commissions for others, a good middleman would take all the heartache out of dealing with some smiths, just ask Lowndsie

While I'm not in love with the look of 'this one' I love what it does to foxes! Nice work AI.

Re: First 300WM fox!
It really is to much gun haha, but it does the job! Should be taking it out on the rabbits really soon at longer ranges and hopefully videoing a bit of it.
This rifle is a dream to shoot. I did not want to run a muzzle brake, and I was unsure how it was going to be in regards to recoil and spotting shots. It is ok with good technique, can see fall of shot with little issue. It really is mild to shoot!
The stock might not be everyones cup of tea, and I will admit it wasnt mine to begin with. I usually dont go for these sort of stocks, but I hate to say it, it is great. It really is nice to hold and get behind of. Enough so that I will have one in short action soon enough. It is nice to carry, great to shoot.
Cheers

You dont know AI very well mate .... wait a few months and he will want to build something else and you can buy this one second hand with all the load development done for you. He does look after his gear so it will be in good nick and he is an honest bloke who wont rob you.17hmr wrote:one moment im thinking in my head "i dont need another rifle, im happy with what i have". then i look at your posts and fall in love with what you make. would you ever think about building a rifle for others for a small fee?

Re: First 300WM fox!
I was thinking a RUM or WinMag would be great with the extra length in the CIP mag, all it woudl take is a little tweaking of the feeds lips.
I would go for a longer barrel too, i can get 2940 with 208match projies out of my 300wm stevens which has a 28" barrel.

Re: First 300WM fox!
Is it time for me to head down to Albury, AI?
(note to self, really need to play with lighter rounds in the '42 - currently only using 208 AMAXs...).
