Is it possible/legal?

Post by Buffy »

Is it possible or legal to get a 10/22 and have it modified by a gunsmith so its just a "straight pull bolt" instead of a semi? if so what would be involved and what do you think it would cost?

just thinking out loud, any advice appreciated!

cheers

Don't know the legalities, but I wouldn't think it'd be allowed. If it was modified overseas before being imported into Australia, that'd probably be alright. Also, I reckon it would be cost prohibitive having a 10/22 modified to a straight pull in this country, even though you'd think it'd be a fairly straight forward mod. You'd be better off just buying a straight pull .22 from the get go. Theres a few biathlon straight pulls around and others like the Browning T-bolt. If you absolutely have to have a 10/22, there's a bloke on another forum that's importing the PWS T3 Summit, which is a 10/22 straight pull. This is all just my opinion, I don't have any facts or figures to back up what i've said, so I could be talking through my arse.

I'd think that it wouldn't be doable as you'd firstly need a Cat C lic to get the 10/22 in the first place - following that, as the action and internals are designed as a semi-auto, conversion to a straight pull bolt would not only be costly, but there could be concerns that the bolt could be removed & the semi-bolt & springs, etc be returned, taking the firearm back to semi-auto. If it can be done, I doubt it would be cheap :(

If you want a straight pull that uses all of the 10/22 hardware, this would be your best bet:

Pity that big a$$ magazine makes it a category C longarm also (IIRC)

Ruger 96/22 is the closest cat A rifle you will get to the 10/22.
Besides wouldn't a lever action be quicker still?

I'd think only reduced capacity in NSW unless you have a cat C lic. IIRC, anything more than a 10 shot .22 mag will class the longarm as cat c 10 rounds or less = cat a

What you want is a PWS T3 Summit. Cat A right off the shelf.

That looks fantastic! Now you've upped the desire factor for a new .22. Then again, I'm tempted by other 22's such as the Henry Golden Boy. Yes, I know the two are totally different...call my interests diverse (or perhaps I'm sucked into sexy marketing)

Hey Buff Buster Craig the big redheaded fella that was in our squad on sunday had one in his car
we had a play with it and I think with a serious look at the trigger they could be a good thing.
