Winchester model94/22 magnum

Although owning a few leveractions now and in the past I have always shied away from Winchesters . I do have a 90 y.o Win model92 .32 cal wcf that was my dear old grandad's but I dont fire it for obvious reasons . I now find myself in a position where I am going to semi- retire a ERMA .22mag that I've had since I was a kid and I have been told that the Win 94/22 mag is a good little replacement . Does anyone know of any drama's or problems with the 94/22 ?

If your keen on the 22mag then stick with it, otherwise the 17hmr owners may try and sway you to the slick little 17. Ive only fired one and it wasnt super accurate but better than the cz 22mag ive got at the mo.

Dave , Thanks for the reply , dont know much about the 17 . Big charge, little projectile is'nt it ? A bit like the famous .22 hornet am I right?

nah the little 17hmr is basically a 22mag case that has a shoulder and takes .17 cal bullets (correct me here if im wrong ppl, not 100% on that) its a rimfire and costs a little more to run than a 22mag but is more accurate on average at greater range. All depends what you intend on doing with it i guess, eg shooting rabbits foxes etc both will work fine but if you have to on the odd occassion like myself put a sick sheep down or something the 40grs out of the 22mag do the job, dont think the 17s would give me that peice of mind but hey thats just my opinion....

Someone on one of the internet forums that I look at did a poll a few months ago to see what was the least accurate firearm people had ever owned . The Winchester 9422 Magnum got a fair few votes . Stirling .22 magnum got quite a few as well .
Like the calibre myself and have owned an Erma and an Anschutz in .22 magnum . Do yourself a favour and buy a good bolt gun . CZ probably unless your budget stretches further .

I had a Win 94/22 mag many moons ago. I read/heard about the alleged inaccuracy of a lever action, etc, etc. However with my rifle if I did my bit I could regularly shot 1 MOA or better [just under .5 inch at 50 yards]. Again off a rest I could hit the end of a spent cartiridge at 25 yards. This level of accuracy was more than acceptable for the bunny busting/pest shooting I used to do. Had to hand the rifle in when my licence expired and I was not into shooting at the time. Have seen the error of my ways and have renewed the licence. The Win 94/22 mag is relatively easy to strip [used a 10 cent piece or was it a 5 cent piece...hate that short-term memory loss] and reassemble. Overall a good fun, accurate rifle although replenishing the tubular magazine is a little fiddly.

The 94/22 mag is a good rifle. It will perform fairly well. Keep it clean and you will have little trouble with them. They are one of the better made lever action 22 mags.

Like most lever guns they are not as accurate as most bolt actions but dont fair to bad. Iggy's rifle is an exception not the rule. He has scored a good one.

Look for one in very good nick as there are a lot of wearing parts in them. And parts are hard to get.

To KJD , Yeah mate , I do know what a .22 hornet is , do you? I know that it's known as one of the most accurate CENTREFIRE cartridges around. Winchester introduced it in the 1930's and it's capable of pushing a 45 gr projectile at about 2500 f p s and now that I think about the hornet I might look at getting one instead of 94/22mag . There is also a .17 CENTREFIRE cartridge introduced by Remington I think ? running around as well , is this what you'se are talking about ? Both excellent round's for foxes and pussycat's , Dont get many of them up here , the pig's , buffalo , and crocs eat them . Kind regards
