Cerakote - First try

So, after being dragged off to the Australia Day ceremony I finally got home to do what I wanted to do for the day. Cerakoting my 6.5x47 Lapua Model 70.

I'm generally happy with the finished product - there are a couple of marks on the action where I had to grab it when the rain started falling, but all in all it came up very nice. The bolt head was microslicked, as was the firing pin.

The action and parts were cooked in the oven at home, the barrel was done on the 4-burner BBQ on a low heat (~130deg C).

Colour is Titanium Blue.

Good work adam. Didnt you want to do the DBM??

Did you make up a jig to bolt the rifle in the BBQ? I made one when i did my 300 whisper with duracoat but after reading up on cerakote it doesnt harden like duracoat so you are not suppose to touch it until its been baked.

That DBM is the prototype - the next version should be a production one and will get coated.

The small parts went into the oven, the barrel was done by itself and I made an aluminium jig up that held the barrel in the BBQ. As you have stated, Cerakote should not be touched before curing so the aluminium only touched the parts of the barrel that were not cerakoted.

I did another part for another rifle and knocked it against another part between the booth and the oven - I'm getting it stripped back and will do it again as it looks like shite.

The bolt certainly slides better than it did, and lockup is possibly the best I've ever had (microslick lugs against microslick recesses).

Yes. Had to buy a new one as the old one was too small. So I bought the biggest one they make (and it's still overfull).

Adam firstly nice job! a couple of questions tho

did you have too remove the original coating?

does cerakote stick to bluing? or do you have to treat it
in muriatic acid to remove the blue?

and where can someone like me for instance buy cerakote and
how many coats did you put on it and how many guns can be done with a litre?

iam pretty hand with a spray gun and even better doing fine camo with an airbrush
from my days doing dioramas and painting camo on RC tanks & planes

Marco, the metalwork must be sandblasted using an abrasive grit. Bead blasting won't do the job properly. The abrasive removes blueing, rust, etc. and leaves you with a slightly rough metal that the Cerakote adheres to like $h!t to a blanket.

Cerakote is available from SLR Coatings in Capalaba (Brisbane area). It takes about 25ml to do a rifle like this as you are only applying a thin coating. The buy size is a 4 fl oz bottle (~120ml) so one bottle will easily do three possibly four rifles.

I just had a complete rifle cerakoted. The action, DBM and barrel were cerakoted in Coyote Tan and the stock has been coated in a shade darker. I think it's called dark earth.

It's an impressive substance.

I'll airbrush the rifle at a later stage in the Desert Storm scheme. I wasn't sure where to obtain cerakote from.

I'm just waiting on a set of Badger Ordnance 50 BMG rings to arrive from the States then I'll do them also.

I had thought of having the Leupold Mark 4 done but suspect it would void the warranty, possibly damage the seals and...if I ever hit skidrow a camouflaged scope wouldn't exactly appeal to everyone and would no doubt depreciate its resale value.

I'm thinking about what rifle I can Cerakote next.
