Thanks, cant wait to see how she shoots, hopefully will get the chance this weekend, got a pack of Hornady "Custom" from Claremont Firearms, will give them a crack aswell.

But the real question now is, has Brad got something to smile about this weekend?

Brad got to smile last night. Put a box of 150gr remmy soft points down the barrel and was quite surprised with the last 3 shots going under an inch and the last two under half an inch. Trying out the sierra 155gr palma matchkings saturday morning.

Very impressed with the rifle so far, barrel seems smooth and fouling appears to be fairly minimal for a factory barrel. Just got to get used to a gun that has a bit more flip off the bipod. Used to watching hits with the 20 practical but although its by no means bad on recoil, the 308 isnt tame enough to spot where the bullet goes

That is great news! Finally!

Getting some nice groups too.

that brings me to my next question, running in a new rifle, is there such a thing? Is there a running in procedure?

I have had a good read through the user manual from the manufacturer, there is no mention of a running in procedure but most people I speak to including independant gun shops suggest to "run in" with similar but not the same procedure.

Is this a gut feeling thing? What someone recons? One guy in the shop said something about wearing in the micro fine edges of the rifling & allow the tooling oils used to sweat out.

Whats the go?

Its a personal thing.

Some will do one shot clean, one shot clean for 20 shots. Others will do one shot clean then 2 shots clean then 3 shots clean etc all the way up til they think its right. Some laugh at the idea and think its a waste of time, ammo and barrel life. Hunters might not bother, benchresters and f classers are a bit more anal about thier barrels.

If you have a hand lapped premium match barrel like a maddco, lilja, tru flite, kreiger etc then you may not need to do it.

I dont know if there is any definitive proof that it helps or not. But for my thinking, and the fact that I have looked down a few of these match barrels and factory barrels with a borescope- yes there is generally some tooling burrs and marks. Not as many with the match barrels for sure. My remington was very good, the only tool marks were just in the throat in front of the chamber. So since this was my first factory barrel for a while, I did a bit of work on the bore with some autosol polish. Be careful this stuff can be easily over worked. I didnt totally remove the marks, but they were definitely reduced a bit and pushing a patch through the barrel was nice and smooth. Then I just did one shot clean, two shots clean, five shots clean, then used the last 12 in the box to zero the gun. During cleaning I used boretech eliminator to remove all the copper and loose carbon out, and iosso bore paste with a nylon brush to make sure any hard carbon scrubbed out. It was still showing copper when I cleaned it before storing it last night, but im not doing any more work on it as I need to get a load sorted before sunday morning. My way isnt the best way, but its what I feel comfortable with.

My last few match grade barrels have been a lilja, true flite, true flite and lothar walther and I still did the one shot clean thing, but didnt have anywhere near the amount of copper coming out of them within the first few shots.

At the end of the day your gun is your investment so you can do what you like. If your wanting it to last a bit then you might want to do a run in. If your happy that barrels are consumables then get out and shoot it. The savages have a pretty good reputation for being accurate so they might not need too much TLC.

Well today was a horror show!!!!!! It appears the mounts dont allow the full range of vertical adjustment on the scope. So basically at 50m it is shooting 6 inches too low & there is no more adjustment left on the scope, its fully cranked hitting the stop.

Back to the drawing board with regards to the scope mounts.

I appear to have these mounts but dont think its that badly misaligned.

on the packaging for the mounts it says Leupold 55741

Thats shocking mate, straight back to the LGS with them. Go for a 1 piece weaver style rail.

Must have been the day for it, I ran out of elevation at 300m in my scope so I had to aim on target where the small post of the crosshair meets the larger post. Shot a 110.7 or 110.6 from memory, for 4th spot, so not too bad. Soon as Im back from holidays its a 20MOA tapered rail and might even lash out at one of these sightron target scopes that are getting good reviews.

hey Palla, is there any chance the mounts are on back to front?... the rear one's should be slightly taller.

My bases look like these ones

With the windage screws at the back & overhang over the eject port but I dont think there is that much difference in height.

Just lashed out on a farrell 20MOA rail this arvo. Shame yours isnt a remmy, otherwise you could have my standard taper rail.

Picked it up, there was no coarse adjustment, the gunsmith had to mill the ring or base (not sure which) down to get the scope adjustments mid range. He even put a few shots down range in their test tunnel to make sure its all good & gave me the test target as proof.

He was unsure if Savage was in the wrong or if Leupold are but should be sorted, proof for me will be this weekend back down the range.

I actually took it to a different shop that is on my way to work for convenience.

I want to notify Savage of the issue but their website does not allow emails only post at the moment. Guess others will just have to find out the hard way like I did.
