ok guy's i picked up a dasiy 901 powerline bb / .177 air rifle for dispaching toads . & got my 1st kill about 40 mins ago . i used beeman silver bear hp pellets with 10 pumps & at almost point blank range between the eye's from ontop . the pellet must of really opened up as i did not go all the way through . but there was a huge lump in the throat underneath it . alot of blood came out the entry hole . i can't beleave it didn't exit , i didn't think to retreeve the pellet till after i threw it deep in the scrub . the dasiy seems to be quite a powerfull air rifle for the money . at 10 meters it groups very well indoors , but i have not finished sighting the scope yet . the trigger is extreamly heavy & opens the groups up a bit ( but i can call the pulled shots ) if the trigger was sorted out i'm sure it would be a very good little out fit . but worst of all is how time consuming & hard to load pellets . i think using steel bb's for toads is the go . i have used lead bb's but they fall out the end of the barrel ( when held barrel down ), but the steels are held by a magnet . the two draw back to this rifle are the extreamly heavy trigger & the dificulty in loading pellets . i might see if a smith can smooth & lighten the trigger one day . one other draw back if shooting groups is how long it takes to fire 5 or ten shot groups if using 10 pumps . but if using steel bb's at point blank , it would be hard to beat , just beware of where the bb's are bouncing but i must say 1 other great feature is the painted steel barrel sleeve & plastic stock & recever means theres almost no outside cleaning needed & a oilled barrel pellet is a very easy way of cleaning the barrel . but $150 - $190 it does the toad hunter & plinker very well . i have a artic fox 2-7 x 32 ao scope . i can't wait to test it out on some of those indian miners . cheers all enjoy .
i just did some penatration test on a phone book & 10 yards . all with 10 pumps .
beeman silver bears hp went 205 pages . but made a very big hole it really deforms & slows down fast .
gamo lead free pba gold alloy pellet 249 pages very small hole & looks like it could be shot again , very hard & light .
gamo pro magnum ( penetration ) 7.56 gr 337 pages . this pellet deformed a little but more less kept it's shape .

i spose the crossman copper coated bb's are still no good . do ya reckon the old pellet in backwards is out of the question too . that was the old trick . mate i'd hate to have to load the pellets @ night it is not easy at all . the silver bears ( flat with raised hollow point are the hardest to load so far ) & like i said the lead bb's just roll down the barrel .
i got to weigh up it's price & ease of loading vs it's funtionabilty to the task at hand . mmm could it be claimed on tax as a pest distruction tool ???? i'm on 16 acres ??????????
Yeah, the copper is just a very thin plating really + won't save your rifling. I have a Crosman 761XL pumper, had it since the late 70's I guess, It's shot thousands of the Crosman copperhead BB's and coated Daisy ones too. Not much remains of the rifling, though pellets still travel nose first and it's still accurate enough for what it is.
If you don't care about the rifling staying pristine, by all means use BB's. And remember that steel BB's bounce back off hard surfaces....
