Mate if I could get 17hmr ammo that cheap all the time Id use it a lot more. Up here in Riverina nsw they go for about $26 per 50. Would get from SA but only trouble is cost of security freight taking away any savings. Check a few gun shops and youll find different prices everywhere. Dunno what they would sell it for not on sale but bet its a fair bit more than that. I imagine over in the west it would be much the same. My cz453 loves the Federal 17 polytip stuff. Got the name as my ex missus reckoned I was only good for one hump.
308 win can do the stock destruction as well as other hunting, get a short barrel 308 and go for it. Nothing wrong with a 30/30 either and lever guns are great fun in the thick stuff, have gone with a 44mag, then 444marlin, 30/30 win and now got 375win, so am not against them for short range stuff.
I got the idea that you were looking at three firearms and I keep coming back to my original suggestion, but its really up to you, if you just want one centerfire then maybe something like a 243win, again common as dog shit, (never owned one) maybe a 257 rob, had a ruger mk1 for years and never had anything get up after being hit with it, as long as I did my bit re placement, bit hard getting ammo in remote areas. Re the stock destruction cant see any problem as most of that is a close range, and again it comes to shot placement.
Any way mate there some ideas, which ever way you go I think you will be able to enjoy yourself, after all thats the main reason for hunting, besides puttin a bit of tucker on the table every now and then

Agree with previous posts listing:

22lr
223
308

All well proven in their particular roles and will cover everything you want to shoot.

Ammo availability a prime consideration.

Just my 2 cents worth!

OK now I don't really know where the big property is but I am guessing from the size it is not that close to a decent sized town.

OK now picture this.... you are just getting to the joint and all revved up ready to blast some piggies away. You pull you gear out..... F#@k I forgot my ammo for the rifle!!!!!! Aggghhhhhhh! Never mind I'll just pop into town and grab some.... How likley are you to get some more unusual ammo in a hardware store in the backblocks? Not likley at all.

Sorry but
.22
.223
.308 or 30.30

That stuff is everywhere and maybe the difference between having a good weekend or having a long drive back.

Edit:
I have a HMR and I really like it but it's not that cheap(where you get it for 17c/shot? I'll go and buy a few thousand!)
