Re: who wants a 19 calibre Calhoon rifle?
So did anyone end up getting a .19 from the states?
I saw these a while ago and think they look like fantastic bits of gear and would consider buying the 19-223 if they are worth the effort.
Regards
Mick

Re: who wants a 19 calibre Calhoon rifle?
Nah Mate,
Jim Leahy from calhoon is a great fella, but he's hard to deal with in that he has no e-mail, doesn't accept credit card etc etc
I'm still interested in the badger cartridge, but the Garin surestrike system http://www.surestrikesystem.com/ offer the ability to use the same 30 carbine case and make into a 20 calibre or 17 calibre. Then theres no problem with trying to source bullets
Really there's not a lot of point to the 19-223 IMHO as the 204R or 20 tac are right there with it.
The 30 carbine based cartridges are somewhere between the fireball based cartridges (17FB, 20 Vartarg) & the hornet wildcats, without the reportedly finnicky nature of hornet ones.
I'm still thinking about a CZ527 with the 20 Garin, actually talking to a gunsmith about it tomorrow

I think Johno just took delivery of one (or will soon take delivery of one).1010011010 wrote:So did anyone end up getting a .19 from the states?

Johno has had one for sometime. He started with a 19 calhoon and then got a .19 badger (unless he's just about to get a 19-223 )

Re: who wants a 19 calibre Calhoon rifle?
Good morning all, raining cats and dogs here, all ferals of course.
Adam it was a straight Cooper 38 in 22 hornet, at this stage it will stay that way, Hmmmm
Re the 19 re barrel kits. I am sure Jim will post direct to you, I am a really big fan of the 19 both hornet & badger. Just to help out a little. If Calhoon fell off the perch tomorrow his outfit would be snapped up in 5 minutes, I really believe the 19 is here to stay. Has a very strong following in the U.S.
For your consideration.
You can import a flat box to 20lbs for postage of $54.00 that equates to nearly 4,500 projectiles. Formed badger or hornet brass is around $34.00 per 100, I know blokes over there who are up to around 19 reloads on the badger brass. With the hornet you can fire form your own. I started with a re barrel kit on browning A bolt hornet, sold it to fund the badger, just did'nt have money to keep both. A light bunny load with the 28grn bullet was my fireforming load. I can't praise the accuracy of these little 19s enough.
No they don't have visa or emails. I am prepared to help out those who realy want a re barrel kit. Similar as I did with pac nor buy. I will be talking to Jim later this week on another matter. So here's what I can do, we work out the cost of what you want, he does not give discounts but I will ask if there is enough interest. He accepts bank drafts, I can get them through my bank for $15.00. If it helps you blokes you can transfer the ammount to me and I will just draw one draft, that will save you dollars. You guys get your import permits for the re barrel kit and Jim sends direct to you and I will pay him in one lump sum
There are several members here who trusted me for a lot more money in the pac nor buy, they can put up there hand if the want to as reference for me. I'm only offering so I can bring this together for you, nothing in it for me. Also I have lucked onto another company for exports of rifles, if a few of you got together you could pull off a nice import at the moment. This company also offers $100.00 off any rifles purchased through them.
Not being sure of the rules re naming the importer I will to see if the mods ok it. You can pm me if you want to, I might even buy a ruger in 19 hornet. For the wife

Re: who wants a 19 calibre Calhoon rifle?
I've bought a few things off Johno in the last year, including a couple of barrels in the PacNor order.
If there is a way to get rifles out of the USA, please PM me with the details. I'm trying to find a cheap, shot out, 22/250 No.1V for a project.

Re: who wants a 19 calibre Calhoon rifle?
Adam, i'll wait a week or so to give those with genuine interest a chance to get back to me, then I will know if its worth following up.
Certainly I don't see any issues with the barrel kit, need to look closer at complete rifles. They are a big pain. In fact the 2 ive coming I went through another importer, it was'nt worth me going through the hassle for 2 rifles.

Re: who wants a 19 calibre Calhoon rifle?
Johno,
I'm assuming the Calhoon rebarrel kits come threaded, chambered ready to screw on?
Are you back in Australia now?
I'm still interested in a Badger as Jim's value for money can't be beat, but as you said getting a complete rifle over is a PITA, so I started considering the .20 Garin simply because it's just a matter of ordering the forming dies and everything else can be sourced here without customs involvement.
If there is enough interest from others to take you up on your very gracious and generous offer to act as facilitator, I will jump on board too, otherwise I'll stay in procrastination land

Re: who wants a 19 calibre Calhoon rifle?
Mate one thing to consider with the garin, is the die costs. You will need 2 step down dies plus the fls set. I am guessing but I think it might run to around $400.00 + just for dies. Not sure if the barrel from Jim would be threaded, I would say yes if its was for a CZ 527. I am playing around with a switch barrel idea using the 5.7 johnson ( 22 spitfire ) as the other barrel. The garin is not new, Johnson developed the his case back in the 60s and there are four different version I know of. With the help of a couple of members here we are looking at 1. forming M.1 brass to 22 & 19 and 2. Trying to work out if the 19 badger reamer can be run into the take off CZ hornet barrels Jim has then a straight reamer to open it to 22. The badger has a shorter neck than both the johnson & garin. Thats why the badger has the higher powder capacity. If I can organize the barrels my thoughts would be to have them sent direct from the U.S. to the individual buyers. I dont want to ring Jim until I can say " look ive got ex number of buyers for the re barrel kit, will you take a punt and post them " There is no drama this end, just need an import permit. As for the U.S. end, I have just received a barrel sent through the post. I think its only major companies they pushing the licence thing with. I don't want this to become a debate on the rights and wrongs of someone sending a barrel, ok? If they are sent and they come through, all is good
Cheers

Guys,
If you need a dealer on this end to send it to i can help, drop me a pm. I like the idea of the rounds but i am with Trev on this one, I woudlnt go for a 19cal when i have soo many 22 cals and a 20 on the way. Now if they made a contender barrel i might be interested. FB, i am with you....buy as many rifle as you can.

As far as a reference for Johno goes, I will put my nuts on the line here and recommend him to you all. For some reason this bloke will go the extra mile and for no personal gain. I would not hesitate to be involved in a group buy with John at the helm.

a master die set for the Garin cartridges is $240 (for 20 & 17 calibres), then it's $140 to purchase a reamer.
Acknowledge that the Garin is nothing new (everything seems to have been done before as far as cartridges go ), it's just very accessible & potentially easy to use.
Jim is better value also, $0.35USD for a formed case vs $0.85USD for a Garin, not to mention how good value his projectiles are.
Do you think he would also send the modified magazines out also?, given that they are integral to getting the firearm (either the Badger or the Ruger) to function as a repeater

Re: who wants a 19 calibre Calhoon rifle?
I did'nt check the figures before posting mate, was working off memory. Clearly thats not up to much
The mag I don't see beeing a problem, just add it to the import permit. Re the CZ mag there are 2 ribs, all he does is machine out the bottom part of the rear rib. I have just received two 221 fireball mags, I think these will be an even easier fit for the badger, just need the lips closing a little.
