The End Of My International Career

Post by Rabbitz »

Well it seems that my dreams of international stardom in rifle shooting have been dashed!!!! (even before it got going)

It also appears that I have been an unwitting drug cheat too!!!

AS a lark I followed a link to the ASADA website and found a page where you can check whether your "medications" are prohibited.

So I plugged a few things in and blow me down, it turns out the insulin I use is a banned substance. So it is over before it began. (Talent and commitment not withstanding)

I am gutted. The fame, the fortune, the frustration and expense - all gone :)

Rabz

(Yes I know there is an exemption process, but that wouldn't fit the story, would it now?)

G'day Rabbz,

I think that if you have a condition and are reliant on such medication then you would have an exemption. The rules are to stop people cheating-not competing.

Personally, I would view any such disqualification as discriminatory.

If your you really want to compete internationally do some research as I think there are some exemptions for medical conditions.
Mate won the lottery at a comp a couple of years ago and had a shadow for a while, must have been stage fright, it took about 2 hours and 6 bottles of drink before they got their sample

I was thinking about this aspect of shooting sports just this morning on the train into work. I was wondering whether benchrest shooting would be as affected by drugs as the more physical shooting disciplines, like prone and 3P.

I'm not saying benchrest disciplines should be immune from drug testing, but just wondering at the physical effects of drugtaking on the shooter in this discipline.

After all, we benchresters basically don't touch the rifles. They sit completely supported on the bench by front and rear bags. I don't see my heartbeat in the scope at any magnification, so what benefit would be provided by cheating and taking banned drugs? A clearer head? Better eye? What?

Rabbitz, ring ASDA and ask whether exemptions are available for your situation, and what you'd have to do to qualify for them. They're quite good people to speak to.

SW, Any drug that calms your mind or nerves would be considered to be anti-competitive, for shooting this would include alcohol, valium etc etc.

most shooters avoid things that wind them up, so speed (amphetamines) and coffee, I know if I drink more than two cups of coffee a day I am not as calm as normal, but if I stop the effect is worse, so I drink coffee and shoot, to my own detriment probably.

Anxiety, stress and fatigue (and a bucket load of others for sure) can really effect your shooting and there are drugs out there that can really alter how your body and mind responds to such things. A clear head and calm nerves can be a great aid to shooting.

I've just gone and typed in valium and am surprised to see that it is legal for shooting but they're not talking about shooting benchrest so their reaction times would be a factor and valium would have a negative effect and not a positive.

Amusingly alcohol is permitted so have fun shooting pissed  (note: I do not actually endorse the handling of guns while pissed)
