.22lr Brains trust ?
Hi All , whats everyones thoughts on the following ? Why do you think some batches of any brand ammo shoot better in one rifle over another eg two rifles exactly the same and one will shoot xxx batch better than its twin ? Next you have a whole bunch of different 22s and some will shoot xxx batch better than others ? If xxx is crap to start with , what does it come down to , my guess would be harmonics , barrel length , twist rate , numbers of grooves all of the above ? As many of you know i have a couple of 22s in my safe , yet the one rifle thats seems to shoot nearly any brand of ammo well , is the most unlikely, Its a very skinny barrelled Anschutz 54 sporter. Is that because we dont expect to much from a hunting rifles ? Or is it we expect to much from our Heavy barrelled rifles and High powered scopes that if xxx isnt going through the same hole it is crap ?

Ron,
I have always thought, with no scientific proof at all, that as rimfires operate at lower pressures and lower velocities they are more susceptible to things like harmonics, vibration and irregular deformation of the projectile.
My thesis is that due to the lower velocities, irregularities in the chamber, barrel and crown have a markedly greater effect on the bullet. Couple that with the fact that we use a soft projectile which can deform and flow more readily but non-uniformly under these variable interfaces within the barrel, then we get noticeable variation at the target.
Further to this, I once made the mistake of working out that on the ISSF 50m target, with the 10.4mm ten ring, the difference between a ten just fully inside the ten and a gauge out to a nine take a misalignment of the rear sights and fore sights of ~0.16mm. Thus we are up against it from the get go.
Seriously, rimfire was clearly designed to fill asylums... (Just take a look at friend Calfee's ramblings - clearly unhinged but can build a rimfire)
