Neck Clearance

Post by MISSED »

Ok I purchased some Lapua 30/06 brass with the plan of resizing to 25/06.I did this with Winshitter nickel cases and ended up with 3 thou neck clearance (My rifles chamber is .290 neck) now with the Lapua brass after a light neck skim to flash up the necks I have 1.5 thou neck clearance on a loaded round. My question is is this enough or should I turn another thou.

Keep turning.

Hmmm. How does that old saying go? Oh that's right. I TOLD YOU SO! Back to neck turning duty for you my friend.

3 thou clearance (1.5 per side) seems to be the minimum acceptable in a field rifle. In my 7-08 (using 308 Lapua cases resized then neck turned to 312 for a 315 chamber) the brass bounces back enough that I can't easily slide a projectile into a fired case. I wouldn't be game to run less clearance.

Yep, I'd strongly suggest you look for a minimum of 3 thou total clearance, and 4 thou won't really hurt that much.

He was standing on the side of the track eating blackberry and was completely nonplussed about the 3 tonne fourby in a 4 wheel lock up with 2 humans running for the back doors to get the packed up rifles and ammo out.Worse thing was we were in the cockies front paddock

Oh well. At least you know he is there. Makes packing the 270 and 25-06 worthwhile.

I am not up to speed on all this fancy neck turning caper, but after the wonderful practical lesson you gave me the other night I do know that a 25/06 case will not chanber in a 20PPC :D

Hi missed , I run the clearances pretty tight on my comp guns but this is in a very controlled enviroment and i re turn the necks every firing , not something you want for everyday .. How i know exactly what size things are is to turn the table on sizing ,i measure the ID of the neck upon firing .. Fire say 3 cases and measure accurately the inside of the neck just as they come from the chamber.. The minium spec you should look for is the same dia as the projectile you just fired, if it's say .3075 on a .308 bullet then turn the neck again .. If your looking for a case size that you do not have to check now and then (as they will grow) then the 1st set up size should be .3085 on a .308 bullet .. Clear as mud , sorry the only way i know how to explain it ..JR..Jeff Rogers

That's not what you said earlier today.....I was being sensitive to my cold, otherwise I'd have been wheezing around on the floor from laughter.

All in all it sounded a bit like the Larry, Moe and Curly show, with the foxes being the ones who did the headslapping.
