20 Cal PCP for hunting

Post by stinkitup »

Hi guys

Just wanting to know if there are any decent 20 cal PCP's with a magazine for hunting. I Think Theoben make some and the other I have found is the Eun Jin Sumatra which for the price the review's look pretty bloody good.

Anyway just thinking at the moment.

Hey Ryan,
I have just sold a Theoben Mk 1 Rapid .20 Cal,it is a very good hunting rifle. I have used it for pest control (Pigeons,Cats,Rats, Rabbits and other pest birds) with great results.
The 20 cal is a very accurate and fairly flat shooting hard hitting pellet when used in a PCP type rifle. The only reason I sold it is to get a Steyr 110 Hunter in 20cal for the experience of owning one. I have never used a Sumatra they seem a capable rifle, but my preference in .20 cal PCPs is still a Theoben or Steyr.
Cheers ,
Ray.

I agree with Ray,Ryan. The .20 is a great calibre and especially good in PCP Sporters now we have JSB Exacts.

Steyr or Theoben for me too.You just don't get trouble with either. Both are superb quality, are well sorted and shoot fantastic straight out of the box.The trigger on the Steyr is to die for!

Rob Potter can set you up with either with JSB's and a nice Hawke scope.

Thanks Ray and again Lewis, the Steyrs always appealed to me for some reason, do they come in a multi shot mag model? I see potters have some single shots at the moment.

Single shot only BUT they are very commodious and easy to load. I could do without a magazine to be blunt. In my experience, they can be a source of trouble in anything ,magzine fed ,airgun wise at least.

I would not let the lack of a magazine sway you away from a Steyr! The rest of the gun over rules that!

Thanks Lewis, single shot doesn't worry me just was curious, I love my martini so its not a foreign thing.

Thanks again, I might have to look at raising some funds. How loud are they? would they be as loud as a 22lr with subs?

Hi Whitey,
Hang on for a while.I have not got the Rifle yet mate, I,m still printing the money!
I have shot a few matches with a mate,s Steyr 110 FT .177 absolutely magic trigger and that gun really sold me on a Steyr.
The build/shooting qualities are something to drool over.
Soon I hope Soon.

They are loud even for a high power PCP but not as loud as .22LR subs.

I think they are magnificent and a bit of a bargain.Everything is just beautifully made. They are a work of art!

+1 for Steyr 110 Hunter.

I got to use a couple of them down at the range a little while ago. One of the guys had his set up as his bunny gun complete with red dot sight. it put an impressive group up at 50m. The other had a weaver strapped on it and had me wondering how much I really needed my second kidney. I was looking at buying a PCP late last year until I shot these. now it's been put on the back burner until I have the cash to buy a Steyr.

I have a friend who has a Steyr and he and I have put it through its paces.

It is a beautiful rifle with an excellent action and as others write here, the trigger is excellent. I am very partial to single shot rifles. The Steyr allows the pellet to be fingered directly into the barrel like a FWB 300S but easier. The "bolt" closes to seal on the barrel. Where is the transfer port you might ask? Well it is in the bolt. The air comes up through the bolt and is then directed onto the pellet. There are "O" ring seals of course. Any length of pellet can be fed. The pellet does not have to be pushed over a transfer port hole which in some rifles causes shaving. This is absolutely the best system.

The Steyr competes with my John Bowkett Hornet Specials at 50 yards and that is saying a mouthful. .... 18.1 gr JSBs are its favourite but it shoots all the good pellets. Hahaha ... that of course means 15.9 gr Exacts and Baracudas ... Other than for Predator Polymags, what else is there? Right there are a couple, you can name them ...... Kind regards, Harry.

Right so is there any difference between the wooden hunter and the synthetic HP ones I notice the cheekpiece is adjustable on the hunter this might be a good thing

I take it kodiaks, jsb, and predators should be up around 30 ft/lb

A tad over 30 fpe from memory.
Greg's has the synthetic butt stock and is quite comfortable on the bench or off-shoulder. The whole rifle looks pretty much rust proof. The barrel seems to be stainless but may be nickel plated?????? I have never had an adjustable cheek piece on a rifle so cannot comment there.
Edit: Bottom left pic showing the loading port with the green "O" ring seal surrounding the transfer port that the "bolt" slides over.
