Custom actions, what brand, who sells them and how much?

Benchrest, F-class, Metallic Silhouette, Handgun Shooting and anything other form of target shooting!

G'Day Waddy,
I did look at the lawton (Geoff Grenfell in Bendigo imports them). They do appear to be a good option but they seem to be used in LR shooting in the US but not in great numbers. (a.JR might know more).

I haven't handled one but it was on my list for my varmint /target rifle project but I would have to order one in as he didn't have a lefty in stock. I think the RH one he had in stock was around $1700 but needed a trigger, unlike the Barnard, who also make a Rem700 clone that you may wish to consider too.

The Lawton would probably make a very good budget custom rifle but you would need to do your research. The Barnard P with trigger at $1800- is very atractive although it is a big action at around 1.45" diameter.

But like PVM has suggested a Rem700 does make a fine custom rifle, it just depends on what you want to do or how much you wish to spend.

hope this helps

Cheerio Ned

I would look at other brands before purchasing a Lawton.

For myself... this is how I list my action choices.

For a rifle out in the field.. Surgeon

Benchrest... BAT

I am keen to try a Borden, and think they will definitely be right there with the BAT.

All the actions I have tried, these above stood out to me. Others worked fine, but just little things put me off.

Shame that Surgeon don't make left hand actions. Rath's looks very good and shoots better than it looks.

Borden seems like a good option. Their Alpine action would be great on a SAUM/WSM.

I have not seen one but from the response on US forums the DEFIANCE actions are right up there.

If you are looking to do anything in any form of competition you would be best served to look at the equipment lists of the various matches where you can see who used what. Unfortunately the likes of FClass are still in the 19th century and do not record who used what but that information can sometimes be found on forum searches where the gear used is sometimes talked of by other competitors.
As for the INCH action, i wish Woody all the best in his endeavours but until he produces one of those dreaded Remington clones, the likelyhood of me ever seeing or using one of his actions on the line is greatly diminished. This is a great shame as it would be nice to see a locally made action be utilized in BR as well as other disciplines.

As for action preference, the BAT for long range has to be the go to action. For short range, who really gives a fuck as next week it will be different, but for FClass it would have to be the Barnard or again the BAT. Other actions are very good, for sure, but if you had a choice......

I said on one post that i would not use a certain product because i did not think it would allow Benchrest pressures to be fully utilized and i was threatened with disqualification from any NRAA event that he and i turned up to because of an unsafe gun and he was a head RO.. All done by PM mind you ..JR..Jeff Rogers ps.. RO is Range Officer not Rank Outsider
