280Rem is essentially obsolete outside of the US and even there it is nowhere near as common as the 270. They are around here but you have to go looking. Its biggest problem was that it was never loaded to its potential as it was designed mainly for semi autos and they needed to keep pressures down to avoid extraction issues. Handloaded in a good bolt action it is better than the 270 but not so good that you would notice beyond a side by side comparrison with the 270 over a chrono. The 280AI is a different matter. In a strong custom or semicustom action you can get the pills singing, but to be fair not so much that they will ever shake the 270 tree. Is just that 40degree shoulder on a straight sided case looks damn sexy and when asked why i am having one built its more a case of because I can. Also on paper it is the ideal cartridge for the majority of my non spotlight hunting and shooting. Anyway that isnt answering your question its just scratching my 280AI itchBrad Y wrote:Cheers Trav

Can get both the 270 and the 7mm-08 in a T3 which is handy...
.....Nothing wrong with the 7mm-08 it gives up about 150-200fps to the 270 and about 300 to the Ackley. The AI estimates are based on other peoples data not mine. I will be able to provide an acurate comparrison in a month or so (fingers crossed).
As far as Donkeys are concerned with the 140gn Woodies or accubonds they are perfect for the donkeys provided the animal isnt running away. Head on into the brisket or the blaze if the animal is still or side on into the heart/lungs will stop them.
Irrespective of calibre if you miss the vitals you will have quite the chase as they are tough buggers.
I have had a little experience with the 270, one of the ringers on the stations I work on has one and it has dropped many a donkey and camel. Again it is down to shot location. Another advantage is the wide availability of ammo, cases and projectiles for the 270.
The perceived advantage of the 7-08 is its a short action which in a T3 is no advantage at all. If you are shooting in scrub its really down to personal preferance. If longer shots ie 300yrds are more the norm I think you would be better placed with the 270, 280AI or 30-06 due more to the greater energy at 300yrds
