Kid friendly ranges in SA for competition

Post by Dr G »

I just took my 10yr old out for a plinking session with a mate of mine, his kids and his sons $150 Gamo air rifle.

Jake finally gets a turn and proceeds to out shoot all of us prone at 25m with open sights on the air rifle. This wasnt just fluke he was hitting a soft drink can with a golf ball on it about three times more often than any of us. The wind was breezy and from all over the place and the rifle as mentioned pretty dodgy but we all had the same conditions.

Watching him he was controlling his breathing, gently squeezing the trigger and setting himself up as consistantly and as stably as he could. I would very much like to get him to have a go with a better air rifle on a range to see how he performs.

Do any of you have any suggestions as to which ranges might be the most open to allowing a 10yr old to have a go under supervision. I am not even sure if there is a minimum age for getting onto a range.

We will be down in the big smoke for a big chunk either side of christmas so hopefully I can get some range time with the boy.
