223 bullet fox pelts

just after a sugestion for a bullet type and weight that will still be effective but wont do too much damage. Will mainly head shoot but at times its not on.

the new barnes varmint grenade bullets might be what you are after. I havent tried them my self but i hope to give them a go soon.

Welcome to the forum Matang. What about trying some reduced loads even 222's exit on foxes a lot of the time.

In my .222 I used to use Speer 45gn spitzers, the list no is #1023, they may not be available anymore...I dunno ¿ I even used them with success in my 22/250 at lower velocities..

I found if you hit them low between the eyes ...sort of on top of the nose area... the pill would be just under the skin at the back of the neck, and usually fell out when skinning them ...plop

This was only for thick winter pelts after a few frosts have fallen (inside of skin white, not blue) if it was early in the season and the skin was still thin it could do some damage for sure...about a 20c peice size tear on exit

I also used some Sako 45gn solids, they were flamin hard lttle buggers and unless you blew a rib out on a heart shot they just gave a 22 cal exit hole. These are definately not about these days but you may find an alternate type. The hole was not even noticable once the skin was tanned

I will be trying the Varmint Grenade bullets in my .22/250 Ackley, driving them as fast as I possibly can. Hopefully they will blow up inside a fox and not do damage to the pelt. Will be an interesting experiment anyhow.

Ive found Sierra 55gn FMJ to be pretty effective, though a sure shot is necessary for a clean kill.

just got back from a nights shooting keeping renyards at bay from a mates farm. they just started lambing. I use a cz 527 223 with meopta 7x50 boy can that thing shoot. also just gone halfs with brother in a T3 stainless varmint in 223 also. got its first kill last night. might try and get a hold of them grenades heard they are hard to get. how would you think the speer 40 grain sp or tnt s would go.

the 50 grain federal "american eagle" factory load works quite well in my .223.
I haven't had many exits using these on foxes.
Squishy heads most of the time on head shots.

Hope your feeling better, I use the eagles a lot as well but i have found i get mixed results depending on range (to be expected really). To their credit they are a pretty accurate budget factory round, quite a few roo shooters out this way use them. The other factory round i like are the Sierra SX 55gn rounds but i have fount these definatley leave a noticable exit hole so no good for pelts.

yep I hope I am too- somebody just forgot to tell my guts that.

I was told of them by a pro shooter as a cheap culling round.

Brought a case of them on special after I had tried them in my .223 - to see if it liked them- and have used not much else since. When they are on special it's a good deal to save yourself some time on reloads.
Just wish I had gottem more than the original case of the same lot number as it had a lot larger HP hole and seemed to open up faster and "whomp" more.
