Reloading for the 17 rem
Reloading for the 17 rem
Just bought a 2nd hand Rem 700 BDL .17rem with the original stainless steel barrel which was on the model in the late 70's. Anyone got some info on this rifle? Serial number has the A prefix too. Also anyone keen to share some of their 17 rem loads? Was thinking of using either 25gr Hornady VMax or HP. Have most of my reloading gear but not a case trimmer as yet? What brands of case trimmers do others out there use as from what i have seen only a few stock them that can be used on the 17.
Thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Reloading for the 17 rem
Matt I bought the same Rifle in the late 70`s.I found that it fouled more than my 22-250 .But that was with IMR 3031 and I think with the cleaner burning ADI powders that should not be so much of a problem.ADI list 2207,2219,BM1,BM2, 2206h,2208 and 09 as the powders to use with the 25 Grn Projies.I would start with 2206h first then maybe BM2.
I think you have made a nice choice in that rifle and when the bug bites you have a good Action to start on.

Mate loads win 748 and CCI br4 primers with 25gr hornady hp's and is seriously accurate not sure on charge weight i'll see if i can find out. Clean every 15-20 shots and you won't have any problems

Re: Reloading for the 17 rem
Just started reloading for a 17 myself. I went with the Possum Hollow Case Trimmer. Not cheap compared to the Lee type trimmers, at about $40 but you can adjust the cutter for 17 Remington, 221 Remington Fireball, 222 Remington, 222 Remington Magnum, 223 Remington. Pretty solid unit. Prob pay to grab the drill adapter bit for it too if you have a few to trim.matt20 wrote:Have most of my reloading gear but not a case trimmer as yet? I'm running 2206H and Fed 205M primers, working up loads at the moment. Hornady 25grain SP but also looking to give the 25grain VMAX a run soon.

Re: Reloading for the 17 rem
Im using the same rifle but minus the stainless barrel, serial number has the A prefix also (early model), shoots very well with 25 grn Hornady HP, 22.5grns AR2206H , CCI primer and I have a old RCBS trimmer which does the job but there are far better on the market these days.
Cheers

Re: Reloading for the 17 rem
I use a Lyman Universal Accutrimer (you will have to buy the 17cal pilot seperate), far from the flashest bit of gear around but it works.
I use 25gr v-max's in both my 17's (Rem700 and M55 Tikka). Tikka likes AR2208 and Rem 7 1/2 primers while the Remmy prefers AR2206H and CCI BR4's. The remmy refused to play the game with 7 1/2 primers when i fitted another barrel for whatever reason. BM2 would also be a powder worth trying.
I get best results from neck sizing 2/3rds of the neck only. I had a few issues with RCBS dies in that the seater plug didn't suit the profile of the v-max's and the FLS die seriously overworked the necks. I relieved the seater plug a bit and now use a Redding neck die and all is good.
I found it best to stay clear of max loads. 4200fps + is possible with 25gr pills but staying around the 4000-4100fps mark is much easier on cases and will reduce barrel fouling considerably.

Re: Reloading for the 17 rem
Hi matt20, all rifles like a different recipe, my 700BDL shoots tight groups with 22.5grns of AR2206, CCI primer and Hornady HP in Remington case.

Re: Reloading for the 17 rem
if you are going to be shooting the 25 grain Vmax i would check the twist rate of the barrel. You will need a 1-9 twist rate to stabilize the 25 Grain Vmax. If its a 1-10 twist it will keyhole the 25 grain Vmax.

They don't keyhole in the 1-10 barrels of my Remmy and Tikka.Wirelessguy2005 wrote:if you are going to be shooting the 25 grain Vmax i would check the twist rate of the barrel. You will need a 1-9 twist rate to stabilize the 25 Grain Vmax. If its a 1-10 twist it will keyhole the 25 grain Vmax.

Re: Reloading for the 17 rem
I am about to start reloading for a 17Rem.
I should get the rifle next week.
The dies, projectiles & brass are getting sent to me in the next week or so.
I am hoping 20gr Vmax, 2206H & 7 1/2 is going to be the winning load.
Got heaps of all the above, don't want to have to buy anything else.

Re: Reloading for the 17 rem
They also keyholed in my remmy's old barrel after around 500rnds from me (NFI how many total it had through it), but so did 20 and 25gr HP's. Replaced barrel and all was good again. I must just be luckyandrewk wrote:25gr vmax's keyholed with my tikka. its a 20cal nowRick1970 wrote:They don't keyhole in the 1-10 barrels of my Remmy and Tikka.Wirelessguy2005 wrote:if you are going to be shooting the 25 grain Vmax i would check the twist rate of the barrel.
