Personally, I think the 17 HMR is the preference of someone that would drive a Volvo whilst wearing ultra white deck shoes and sporting a panama hat. I think that the 17 HMR along with the .204 are simply mere fads and give it time people will revert back to the 222 Magnum, the 223 Rem and in regards to rimfire either the 22lr or the 22WMR.

I have a HMR and a 204, I am however missing the Volvo (but I do own 2 Landcruisers), Missing the white deck shoes only own a pair of steelies, a pair of thongs and a pair of going out shoes for those events that the previous just wont do and you can trade the panama hat for an Akubra. 222 Magnum, spare me that round is rarer than rocking horse turd, 223 I have just sold mine it is ok but is the commodore to the monaro when compared to the 204. As for the rimfires I prefer the hummer to the 22lr for everything except emptying traps. As far as the 22mag its horses for courses both good rounds and SFA between them in the real world.

The 22lr is the 'deadliest and most accurate' caliber in the world and it has the statistics to substantiate the statement, like someone said in regard to the Alfa Romeo syndrome, you may pay more but it doesn't make them better.

Someone had better launch an inquiry it seems the major govts in the world have just wasted a shitload of dollars on Styers, AR-15's and 50cal sniper rifles. All they needed was to get onto used guns and buy a heap of Lithgow model 12's (a mighty fine rifle to be fair)

There are numerous 17 HMR's and 204's on Used Guns. Whilst at Silverdale on the weekend and having a look within the brass bin (I live in hope that I will find a few 6.5 X 47L cases) I found at least half a dozen split 17 HMR Federal cases (I also found a .204 case....woo hoo).

I am also adamant that had I have emptied the bin that I could have found 100's of 17 HMR Federal cases that had split (I actually brought half a dozen home with intent to post a few photos for the forum). I will get around to this.

Loads that are splitting cases are not good for any rifle.

I have had a few split cases it isnt a saftey issue. At first I was worried but after a lot of experimentation and playing around it really is a non event. For what its worth i have encountered a few splits on the 22WMR at the same time (we often shoot these side by side, no real difference they are both great rimfire rounds).

For what they are worth, I think I will stick with the 22lr and the .223 AI build-although, in regard to the latter, I probably should have opted the 6mm X 47 (on the 222 Magnum case).

If you are looking for cartridges that are dying the WSSM's would be my first pick followed by the SAUM's

I've just bought my third HMR, and I own a couple of .204s, too (and a Hornet, a .221 Fireball, and a couple of .223s, besides.) I like them all, and they all work, for one thing or another. I pretty much just use the HMR for hunting and killing stuff, it's a great little rifle for prairie dogs, which I get to shoot here I don't own a .22 Magnum, because the Hornet works a little better and is cheaper to shoot, but I'm thinking about a barrel "just because" it will fit on my new CZ 455.

I've killed all kinds of stuff with the HMR, groundhogs(marmota monax) prairie dogs, raccoons, crows, it's all good. It's easy to shoot well, and if a feller can't kill with it, he needs to look for his balls somewhere, he's obviously lost them someplace.


It's easy to kill shit WAYYYYYYYYYYY out there (in rimfire terms) with the HMR. I've killed PDs at 250 yards with it. Too much fun.

I sold my Annie 17 HMR to a fellow board member and i personally have not Missed it but Mrs MISSED has and that would be why she is buying her very own CZ varmint with a Sightron S11 4-12x42.I may have to buy a another safe so it does not infect my rifles.

I have lotsa pics of dead prairie dogs, how many can you stand? Honestly, though, after several trips up to SD from Kentucky, I don't take many pics any more, all the gutpiles look alike, and one prairie dog looks like most any other one, empty of innards Coons I don't even take pics of, because they are so common to roadkill sights everywhere, I see zillions of them dead on the road. Possums, likewise, our possums are different than yours, but still not much to look at.

I really prefer to catch our possums alive, and put them in the boss's office at work. If he ever finds out who does that, I'll be fired, but until then........................
