6.5 grendle or 6.8 spc

Post by deadkelly »

i'm helping my girlfriend choose her first rifle . after feeling / shouldering a number of rifles the 2 she likes most is a win m94 30/30 or the ruger hawkeye compact in 7.62x39 .
to date she has only fired 15 rounds of 22 lr & 2 x 12g shells .
she is quite small framed . & i don't want her to develop a flinch so a small cased round with mild recoil & muzzle blast is the way to go i think .
the hawkeye comes in 6.8spc & topped with a 2-7 compact scope i think would be awsome i think .
i would prefer the 6.5 grendle myself though . what do you guy's think ?????
i'm running out of time tonight but can you guy's help with narrowing down what rifles are avalable in these rounds . small light weight is a must ( so i think the hawkeye with 16.5 " barrel will be hard to beat ) thaks guy's . mostly will be used on rabbits & hares & foxes but goats the odd piggy & maybe a crack at a fallow deer or 2 . anyway i must go thanks .

There are no factory rifles available in Australia chambered in the 6.5 Grendel.

But you can make one pretty easily (although not cheaply).

A Zastava 7.62x39 action - $390.
A 6.5cal barrel profiled to your choice - $600.
A stock - $150.
A little dash of gunsmith - $200.
Bases, Rings - $80.

The whole lot will be lighter and smaller than the 6.8SPC offerings built on the Remo700 action and will be very very accurate due to the better quality barrel.

I've got a reamer and go/no-go gauges for the Grendel case. I'm building one like the above description when I can afford the barrel (I've got the rest).

IMHO it is a better case than the SPC, but realistically they are quite similar. 100gn NBT @ 2700fps from a 20in barrel is fairly convincing from a rifle not much bigger than a 22.

The Hawkeye is a good thing, but I can't help thinking with that action you'd be better off with something like a 260 Rem and loading it back a little for starters.

A stock standard 6.5x55 in mauser 96 or tikka t3 lite is the way to go, short barrel = uncomfortable muzzle blast my missus is 5' 6" and 58 kg and never complained once about shooting my mauser 96 until i sold it now she wants me to buy another one. A .222/.223 will handle the odd pig/goat if loaded with decent bullets

TBH I'd get something easier to get ammo for like a .243. Good earplugs and a bit of offhand practice will sort out any potential flinching.

THe old swede is a pussy cat to shoot too, don't think you would notice difference between a 6.5x55 and a 243 but you can shoot 80-160gr loads. 100 Grainers are flat shooting, bugger all recoil and will handle goats and most pigs you come accross. As a teenager the 6.5x55 was my first center cal and still love it now.

Everything i have read on the 6.8SPC makes me like it as a 200m rifle. I tried to get one but it was sold before i got there.

Now that's a build idea I could get behind  . I like the idea of a super efficient case like the Grendel throwing high BC pills. Be sure to post a report when you get this build done. The major advantage the Grendel has over the 6.8 is availability of high BC pills. If it's a close-medium range rifle only then I don't think it matters which you pick.

I'll post the build as it happens, hopefully before Easter next year if the $$ line up the way I expect them to.

Since my local range is the same as your one, we can sort a little shootin' session once it's done. :rifle:

I take it that you will be re loading your girlfriends rounds for her? Otherwise both of these rounds are not too easy to get a hold of out bush. Never shot a 6.5x55 but by all accounts it would be great for the goats and pigs. Would make a fine mess of a bunny though!

yeah plowboy i'll be loading . although it's her's i can see myself using it more than she     .
i'm kind of thinking about a marlin xs7 in 243 & maybe chopping the barrel down to 20" & maybe improving the std 243 or rechambering to 6mm br norma .
how dose the 6mm br feed in short actions ??? would i need to have the mag altered ????

BTW
i may be getting a mod 70 win in 222 rem . it was bought new in 68 but it had a too tight head space & has only fired 18 rounds . what can i do with this action ???? it was over a year ago i last held it & i remember it being very heavy for what it is . apart from the head space problem it's very good condition with a little bit of surface rust , but f'all .
ether fix the head space & just shoot it or do i hot rod it

Sounds like a candidate for a .20 prac or a vartarg. I suppose you could open up the boltface to a bigger banger....

On a 223 bolt face:
20 Prac
20 Tac
204
223
6x45
300 Whisper

Or you can get the bolt face opened up to PPC or 308 sized and there are shit loads more calibres.
