Custom rimfire barrel or Factory.??

G'day All
I am in a bit of a undecided state.!!
I have a new 1913BR50 Anschutz and from the 1000 rounds or so I have put through,it seems to shoot very well,I have shot a few groups under .100 thou(best .075") and it consistently shoots 199-200 with usually above x15 centres.
I looked down this tube with a bore scope when new and also a new Maddco blank at the same time and this tube is as good if not better.
Some days though I dont seem to shoot well with it and others its just brilliant,this is obviously shooter error and ammo and major wind being a factor.
How do score shooters compare their barrels to group shooters.?
I suppose my question is-would a custom barrel shoot any better or am I just better off to stay with what I have.??
I dont want to spend the dollars if im going to get no better result.!!

price is around 900-1000 supply and fit and test.???

If you're getting 199's/200's consistently with it, stick with it. What do you think a custom barrel (like a Lilja) is going to do for you? Score 200's consistently? Put one round inside the previous round's hole consistently? Because that doesn't happen IMHO.

Mitchell Tallar shoots so well because he practices, reads the wind really well, knows the holdoffs, has tuned his rifle for the ammo he's shooting, and ensured he's got a goodly supply of the ammo that shoots well through his rifle.

There are a lot of factors which could be causing you to drop the odd shot - not picking the wind and holding off appropriately, humidity changes, temperature changes, trigger control and technique, general setup technique for each shot, the front rest, maybe the foreend edges are getting caught on the front bag causing subtle recoil problems, etc.

Do you have a thumbhole stock (the BR50 stock is a quasi-thumbhole stock)? I don't like these in benchrest - they may be comfortable, but it gives you a much bigger opportunity to "man-handle" the rifle around. You shouldn't be touching it (especially for rimfire shooting). Don't put it into your shoulder, don't apply any cheek pressure, let it free recoil straight back towards you. It'll travel about a cm or less in total recoil, which is miniscule and insignificant.

Be aware of the subtle differences in the different batches of the same brand ammo. If you've found a batch of ammo that shoots well, buy as much of it as you can afford, and that you can find. If you're buying expensive ammo (Lapua eXact), you generally don't need to batch and weigh them. If you're buying cheap stuff, you should seriously think about batching it yourself for weight, and rim thickness at the least.

Also, one final point, you may need to look at the tension on your action screws - they do have an effect on the shot groups.

One of the guys at Sutherland shoots a BR50. He plays with his action screws all the time (and then wonders why he shoots so badly at times...), but he's also recently invested in a barrel tuner. That alone may give you a bigger bang for your buck than a new barrel.

Sounds like were on the same page with this.
I am anal about action tension screws and I have a lowey tuner fitted and i tension it on also.
I spent plenty of time and ammo to get this gun to shoot with a tuner,very slow and painful process.
I find the stock configuration great as thats what im used to,I usually only touch the gun with my trigger finger and my thumb.
The days when I dont shoot so good are almost always windy days,I need more wind practice.!!!!
Im just going to stick with it for the while and see what happens.

Get back on ya meds...you're thinking too much...take it to Coffs and give Mitch a floggin...Having 30 odd flags in front of you might make that 199 a 200 more often...I would kill for a rimfire that would shoot groups that low even if it was only one every so often...shoot it in competition and compare it to other rifles before deciding to spend money on it.

And on that note they are taking entries for the state rimfire shoot in Oct at coffs,it will be a good weekend for sure.Damien come on down and have a shot and as Steven has said give it a good work out and then see if you think it needs working on.
