.30-06 overall length ?

Post by clickclickboom »

Hi guys

Go easy on me, its my first time.

I have just finished my first batch of handloads (ever) for my .30- 06. I've used Remington Korelokt 150 grain projectiles.

I have given them a nominal overall length of 3.200" (the length of the projectiles themselves have about a 20 thou range in different lenghts) as that is what my Lyman handloading book specifies as an overall length for that weight bullet, but I've measured some factory core lokt rounds and their overall length was a fair bit shorter (i cant remember exactly as it was more than half an hour ago  ).

What do you guys think i should do? Keep it at 3.200" or shorten it to the likes of the factory rounds?

Cheers. James.

PS- expect to hear a lot more from me, as I've caught the spend-all-your-disposable-income-on guns-and-hunting bug.

Welcome mate.
Providing the ammo chambers in the rifle properly without engaging in the lands and it also fits in the magazine then the closer you are to the lands the better. That said you dont want to engage the projectile in the lands as this will cause a massive amount of pressure and could be a danger to you.

I'd imagine the Lyman book quotes the SAAMI OAL so it should be fine either way. But you can go longer than the recommended OAL providing you're not engaged in the lands and it fits in the mag.
