Time for a 17hmr

I've got a Rugger M77 all weather and its a cracker of a rifle, its had the trigger worked though. I also owned a CZ varmint HMR and it was every bit as good and shot virtually the same as each other, under half an inch @ 50 and around the inch @100.

The HMR seems real good on the internet.
But i don't find the results as good.
The price of ammo is high.
You can reload most 17-22cal centrefires for cheaper & more accurate,
but if you are a volume shooter like fenring you would spend ages in the reloading room.

Myself i take out 22LR for most stuff, need any more power or range i skip to my 223.

Yeah, it;s often said that you can reload smaller CF's for what you can shoot the HMR for - or less.

As you say, it's no good to someone like me, who might go out a couple of times a week and shoot a truck load of varmints. 50 rounds in an arvo is no big deal, and most of those shots will result in a kill. Most kills result in free dog tucker - I've even been offered pretty good money for rabbits as pet tucker but TBH once it becomes a business the fun can go out of it.

No way I'd want to spend all that time reloading, while it can be enjoyable I think it would grow old pretty quick if you were burning a lot of ammo. Not to mention stuffing around worrying about lost cases etc.

I like the fact that I can easily shove 100 well packed and protected .17HMR rounds in my bumbag and be able to shoot rabbits until I'm sick of it, and it has happened a few times.

The cost of HMR ammo is an issue for some, but IMO it's still a cheap gun to run - from $20 to about $25 for 50 rounds, for hunting that's a few shots and a lot of fun - most people spend that money on fuel in just a few days, driving to a job they hate.

I still use the the .22 a fair bit, I just take whatever tickles my fancy at the time. Often it's the HMR, sometimes it's the .22, sometimes it's the shotgun - just whatever I feel like. Most often it's the HMR as I just find it so much fun and so effortless to snipe bunnies with, right out to that 150m line - "mediocre accuracy" or not, it's such a fun little rig.

I have had a marlin hummer for a couple of years now mate and since the .223 came along about a year ago it is less likley to come out of the safe. Getting to the point now that I reckon I am going to sell it once I shoot off the brick I bought for it. It was purchased in the hope of being a "rimfire with centrefire performance" which it certainly is not. No doubts about the accuracy of these little rifles and it is certainly fun to shoot.

But now in my situation the hummer does nothing that a .22 cannot do cheaper. I can load the .223 for the same price if not cheaper than hummer ammo and I know it has the legs to get the job done to as far as I can shoot. By all means if you are after after a bit of fun and not really worried about price and overlapping performance of you rifle get a hummer.

Fenring is right. Centrefires, especially if reloading them have their drawbacks. Hummers can be a fun day out on a rabbit warren and are a LOT quieter than a centrefire like a .223. But don't be tempted to use it for something it is not designed for. They are just another rimfire and some of the marketing hype(which I fell for) suggesting anything more is setting people up for dissapointment.

I have shot and killed several foxes with a HMR but these were within a range I felt comfortable that it could do the job. I would not have a crack at a fox more than 100m out (especially now with a .223 with me). A hummer may be able to get the job done beyond that quite easily but I don't want to have to find a critter to finish it off. Hell I have nailed a couple of goats with my hummer. I will put that down to a rush of bloody with a new rifle. Not to happen again.

agreed with plowboy there, i've shot a number of foxes with it too. the hummer was all i used for one season and on everything but when winter rolled around the joy began to stop. foxes get thicker coats, it seemed harder to find that spot through the chest that worked before in summer and trudging through cold, wet gulleys at night made it harder for head shots and more or less effective for that sort of shot placement.

the hummer in my opinion is a very boardline cartridge for foxes, particulary big ones in mating season and pushing it beyond a 100m you want near perfect conditions and crosshairs between the eyes to garrantee a human kill.

i must admit though i loved that rifle and would have another in a heartbeat but i think its limited to rabbits, crows, hares, cats and the odd fox of opportunity.
