1000yd BR in WA

Looks like my local range has had 1000yd benchrest approved for the coming years. They did a shoot a few weeks back but since there is no bench set ups yet, they shot prone. Usually we shoot f class anyway so it made no difference. I wasnt able to make it but groups around the 400mm mark were the norm apparently! Smallest group was a club visitor using a borrowed 308, beating improved BR's, 6.5x47's etc. I belive one shooter is starting a 300WM build so it seems to be going ahead. Now im in two minds as to whether to build a new rig or not.... I think I would only ever shoot LG and i will be doing it with the 22BR to start with to see if its something I want to get right into.

Will keep everyone posted on updates with the club and the BR setups.

that's good news about the introduction of 1000yd BR into WA.

when it's up an running, an open offer and invitation is made to all that are interested, to become involved in the Australian representation for our International 1000yd BR Postal Matches with the USA.

we already have competitors from Victoria, NSW,ACT and Qld actively involved, with South Australia also soon to become part of the team.

Western Australia members would be a most welcome addition to the above.

I second what Dave has just said, great to see yet another range on line and hopefully one that joins into the Postal with Virginia. The only reason i got back into 1K was because of this postal.
I know this might sound a little silly to a starter to 1K, but my advise would be to bypass the LG and head straight over to HG if you can. Reason is that the HG is so much easier to deal with and learn to shoot the wind and the mirage with. With a LG, there are so many variables to get the thing to shoot right and not leave you wondering if it is the gun or you or the bag setup. Sure it is 10 shot groups, but the number of sighters in both classes is about the same, just the record differs by 5 shots. That is not too great a price to pay.
Now i am not saying go out and build some big banger in 30 cal or something else along those lines. Keep it simple. Straight to a 6 BR, no derivatives, just the stock tight neck version. Get the gun to about 25 or 30 pounds so that it sits there like a log, use an action that can spit out the brass reasonably quick and can be cycled quick. The low recoil, the light HG weight and the unsurpassed accuracy of the 6 BR and a good 107 SMK is where i believe all starters should head to. Guns like this are being used by a number of top shooters in the various sanctions in the US and are doing extremely well. There is a way to get these guns to compete with the big 30s. Sure you might get dusted on the really rough days, but you have to remember, 1K is about the six match, not the one match. On the rough day, you just have to use it for experience for the next time, and walk away writing off that match getting placed into the six match agg. Not all days are crap, unless you live up here where the days are just a little less or more crappy than the last

I can tell you now, a 22BR with whatever projectile you wish to use, is going to disappoint. I would like to see someone come into this with something you can learn with, and quickly, rather than come into it behind the eight ball only to walk away with a bad taste in your mouth.
