Scope choices?

Post by Hawkeye77 »

Hi all,

Its been a while...

The missus is in the throes of obtaining her firearms licence (SA) and she's picked her first rifle out. Its a Savage MKII TR in .22LR, now i know all of you purists and nostalgics will scoff at this but she likes it, i like it and i think i will make and excellent trainer for my .308 TRG... Plus if it doesn't shoot so good i'll just get her a Brno and keep the damn thing for myself (win-win situation!).
However i digress, the question im asking is what kinds of scope would you suggest for this particular rifle. Bear in mind i will not be competing with it, it is merely a cheap and fun trainer rifle, i want to keep it in the same style as the the rifle itself, so im thinking large objective, target turrets, mildots to match the Burris on the TRG, etc (Tactical style is what she wants, and what would suit the rifle best as a trainer for the centrefire).
I also don't want to spend thousands on it, i was wanting to keep the budget around say, $500AUD? Any suggestions?

Thanks

Hawk

I got a clearidge 6-20x40 on my 6BR and love it, it has mildot with target turrets i got it from TOZ under $500 easy its bright and clear under spotlight up to 12-14x and daylight use allows up to 20x with out problem you can use it on 6x for spotlighting rabbits and higher powers for target or paper punching.

If you buy in the next couple of days (on or before the 20th) you will get 7% off for father's day (you can use both the US one and AU one  )
The 7% will cover the 2% CC surcharge and get you 5% better deal (making up for the slipping dollar).

But if it is being used as a 'trainer' for range time with a similar setup.

But if that is the case really you would want everything to be the same,
example: Tikka Varmint 308 in a Manners MCS-T4 with a Bushnell 3200 Tactical 5-15x
& a Sako Quad Varmint 22LR in a Manners MCS-T4 with a Bushnell 3200 Tactical 5-15x
Everything is as close as possible to being the same (Stock, Scope & Trigger)
Downside is it would cost More for the 'trainer' than the 'real gun'

hmm, after about 50-60m accuracy with a standard 22 is going to depend on the breeze and the drop. If you want to teach someone to shoot accurately with a field 22 then you should be doing it at about 50m. So why would you need more than 6 x ?

Trev

Shooting a 22lr with subs to 200m is supposed to be similar in trajectory to 308m at 900m. Ive heard of F class 308 shooters using a 22lr to practice. Im guessing he would be looking at long range shooting with his 308 and using the 22lr to train up.

Wow Trev,
60m only with a 22lr? Should be good to 75m for bunnies.
I have a 3-9 on my 22 and it most certainly isn't a nikko. I don't think that people shouldn't take their 22's seriously.

Yes Brad, I've done it, also a gust of wind blows you right off the target so its not a training excercise for field shooting, its a full on comp drill and your wasting your time without wind flags etc.

Sorry keith, add 75m then, a 6 power couldnt see a rabbit head at 75m?

I take my 22 seriously now too. I shoot rabbits with it.

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the input, but i ended up dropping in to see my good friend Pommie at the AGS who just happened to have what i was looking for... last one in the shop too!
So i ended up with a Olivon 4-16x50IR (30mm tube), looks the business and i think is really a good scope for the price, definately value for money i would say. This is the second Olivon i've bought and the other one is just as clear.
Its a mildot to match the Burris on my TRG and the centre do illuminates either red or green with 5 stages of brightness. I wasn't intending on buying one with an illuminated reticle but it was a nice touch and everything else about the scope was what i wanted.

Anyway, i have only just picked up the rifle the last few days but i will be taking it out to shoot some groups next sunday so if i remember i will try and take some pics so you guys can see how it goes.

Well heres some pics of the rifle with scope mounted... The bipod is just a cheap remington that i bought at a gun show and the mounts are leupold.
I keep getting told that i should throw a tupperware party with all the plastic i keep in my safe! ...but i don't know, i think its a pretty good looking bit of kit myself ;)
