Should my choice be a 22-250?
Here's the plan.....
My son has started to shoot at the SSAA range and seems. so far, to be keen.
Should this keep up ( his enthusiasm ), I would like to get us sorted with some 22LRs for "range work".
I hope to do some varmint shooting on crown land at a later stage.
...my dream however is to get a 22-250, I wanted one years ago and got talked into a 270 instead.
If I want to get a larger calibre for pigs etc later on ...is the 22-250 to much?
Or is a 22-250 and something like a 308 or 30-06 a good combination ?
Your thoughts appreciated.

No flies on a 22/250 for varmint work ... and will handle the odd pig and goat as well!
But maybe also consider a 204Ruger ... when varminting and using a big scope ... seeing your hits is kind of fun ... and shooting is ALL about having FUN.
Cheers...

I had the 22-250 & 30-06 combo as my hunting guns for years. I found the two didn't leave many gaps. Add your 22 rf & maybe a 12g and you are pretty well covered .

If you have a 270win and 22RF and you add a 22-250 or 204 you will cover most hunting situations

If I had to have one cartridge for varmints (rabbits, hares, foxes, cats etc). It would be the 22-250rem. I have one and its great.

A good mid range calibre is a 243!
People bag them but I know 2 blokes with them and they do shoot!
1 is a Ruger VT and the other is a Remington VLS.
Worth a look.

A 22-250 is an excellent varminter and at sensible ranges shot well it will drop goats and pigs.
The 223 and 308 combo AI mentioned is excellent as well. The 308 will drop all game on this continent.(Yes sambar and water buff included,I've done it enough to have no doubts)I like using a big magnum but it is not really necessary if you can stalk and shoot where you aim and use a good projectile.
The shooter can make or break the rifle.
A 22-250,220 swift,223 or a 204 are all solid choices for the rabbits and foxes.
I still rate the 220 as the king of varminters.
See if you can get to handle and fire a few rifles in these calibres and one may suit you better.
Have fun deciding

Re: Should my choice be a 22-250?
will this be a dedicated varmint rifle or all round rifle ? are you reloading ???? what weight rifle are you looking at getting ???
if just small game with the odd goat or pig occasionally 22/250 great even 223 , but if more likely a everything rifle I'd say a 243 . you can buy factory varmint bullets as well as medium game bullets & I'm sure you could also get deer loads . recoil is mild for the young bloke & they come in a short action to keep weight down abit . a good 4-12 scope would top it of nicely .

204 is a better one.
though Kerriet's 22/250 T3 lite just got its first fox under the light at about 150m. dam I hate that gun. Load testing 2 custom rifles (with different brass) and then pull out the light factory Tkka with the too short barrel and fire 2 groups, 3 shot clover leafs!!
