Does anyone have any experience with the out of the box accuracy of the SPS? I'm looking to replace my lard arse 9 odd lb 300RUM BRNO 602 with something hopefully a lot lighter. The rifle will be used for medium but as usual will do most (if accurate, read all) of my varminting as well. At just over 7.5 lb in 300RUM I reckon the SPS would be ideal, and particularly happy with the price. But the worry is will I be able to make it shoot with out spending big bucks on it? I'm not expecting 1/2 moa or anything as I can rarely take advantage of that kind of accuracy in the field any how. Anybodies knowledge or experience with these would be greatly appreciated.
Regards Brett
Remington SPS accuracy??
Brett,
No experience as I've got a much better rifle in an older BDL 8mmRemMag . I looked into the SPS awhile back and I reckon at their price I'd be willing to take a risk on one, if I was interested in a cheap 300RUM that is. I'd expect 1.5MOA factory new, to come down to around MOA once bedded and loads developed for it.
At the price can you really go wrong? Besides my thinking was its only 1500 rounds away from a match-barrel if it did shoot like crap. For something different on the cheap I also considered a 7mmRemMag rechambered to 7mmSTW.
Cheers...

I expect it would be the standard 'luck of the draw'. The basic components are ok, but it would almost certainly need to be bedded and have some work done on the trigger.
Beyond that, Rem 700s can be tuned up as far as you like, and the SPS is a popular starting point for people who just want the action.
Of the last 5 Rems that I've bought with lightweight barrels, all have shot acceptably, and a couple have been outstanding.

SPS 30/06. Trigger worked and barrel floated. Does under an inch everytime with 150gr winny power points and 59gr 2209. Most groups will be just over the .5 mark.

I have an SPS in 30/06 that shot OK out of the box, but with a trigger job and some minor attention to bedding, I can get MOA accuracy easily with 150 grain Sierra's and 58 gns AR 2209. The 30/06 would have to be one of the easiest cartridges around to load for. I have left it in the original stock for now, as it is a great carry around pig rifle (killed quite a few so far), but I have a H&S for it on order.

Gidday Brett. I have recently purchased my first centrefire rifle, and my choice was the new Remington 700 SPS Varmint in 22/250. I recently went up to NSW on my first varminting outing, using Remington factory loads with 55gn PSPs. This rifle was devastating on the local pest community, accounting for 1 rabbit, 2 foxes and 3 roos in its first evening of duty. I cannot fault the Rem 700 SPS range, nor the Rem factory ammo. They are absolutely superb. I am one very satisfied customer. Good luck with the purchase.

Remingtons aren't test fired for accuracy at the factory so they themselves have no way of knowing whether a given rifle will meet any particular accuracy criteria . Nor do they publicly quote or guarantee an accuracy standard like Weatherby , Sako or Tikka . You are their test pilot . If you are unfortunate enough to get a dog that shoots 2 MOA I have a feeling you'll find that it meets Remington's accuracy specification .
Why don't you ring Raytrade and ask them what level of accuracy (with premium factory ammo) they will guarantee if you buy a new Remington 700 SPS ? It's a fair question and plenty here would like to know the answer .

I use a Remington SPS in .223 Maybe i got lucky but it has shot accuratley out of the box from the word go. that said the trigger weighed in at over 9lb but i had this adjusted down to just under 3lb by a gunsmith and since then it shoots like a dream.
its fitted with a bushnell 3200 4-12x40 scope and is my main cat/fox gun at the moment.
I cant provide you with MOA data as its never been to a range but to date the best shot was a small 2kg cat under spotlight in light scrub at 410 paces. In the terrain where i work my average pace is .751m so that works out to about 307m. I regularly take cats at over 200m and given the size of a cats head under spotlighting conditions i am happy with the accuracy of this gun.
I have ambitions of floating the barrel and bedding the stock but that will have to wait until i have been shown what to do by someone competent
