Haven't done any for a while and have a freezer half full of skins.
With a shed full of tanned hides I had ran out of things to do with them. TYB was home last weekend so we went through the pile and picked out a few pretty fallow skins, attacked them with the belt sander to break them and tidy them up before trimming to shape and making them a bit more presentable.
Sat them in the shop, they have generated plenty of interest, not only with people buying them but also with who I had tan them.
Years ago I did a bit of tanning for people, might have to work out some prices again and do a few more from the freezer to restock the shop.

Yep, enjoyed doing it a fair bit years ago, haven't done any for around 20 years now, wont be doing any again either, just cant be bothered, and I know an old fella who really loves doing tanning.

Only hint I can give is, SALT, plenty of salt.

Never really found it a chore as if I didn't feel like tanning something I just didn't. The fallow skins have been walking out the door at $150 which is certainly a bit of motivation to start doing a few more.

I was distracted by work today when I saw this thread and thought: Aren't tanning beds illegal now? Then I realised

Certainly a good price if you can keep the demand coming, nearly worth setting up a semi professional set up. I thought it was pretty good getting 50 bucks for a smelly old billy goat skin a few times.

I used to tan stuff for beer when I was a young bloke , Roos , dingos and even did a few goannas

Might have to do something, got another call this morning from a woman wanting a steer skin done.
Wasn't sure what she needed to do with it, haven't committed to doing it but the steer was only rolled this morning so have got her putting the skin into the freezer to buy some time.
Might have to flick barryb a pm about prices, had a quick look online and found some NZ prices but that was it.
The NZ prices seem fair for the smaller stuff
Deer/goat/calf $130-140
Cattle Im not sure, prices were $500-760 depending on size, probably not to far off considering last time I was in a hide shop cattle skin rugs were retailing for $700+
