I'll be heading down for a bit of an explore for 3 weeks. Any recommendations on places to go/things to see?

Its a bit like kickenback's thread on Noumea, don't remember much of my few days there, although the Cadbury chocolate factory was good, especially the "help yourself" bins for the reject stuff. I seem to remember the casino was a good place to pick up as bit of skirt. :D

Lived there for 13 years before moving to the N.T
It will really depend on the weather on the day. If you like nature them the limestone caves out near Mole Creek are good King Solomon and Marrakoopa guided caves, take a picnic/food with you. Cradle Mountain is another spot (all north end of Tassie) The lakes around the central highlands are nice to fish trout season is open first Saturday of August in any year to the Sunday nearest the 30 April in the next year for brown trout and Saturday nearest to 1 October in any year to the Sunday nearest 31 May in the following year for rainbow.

There is also the Salmon Ponds at New Norfolk, but it's salmon in name only. It's really a trout farm and most of the inland waterways in Tasmania are stocked with trout, not salmon. (Near hobart).

Gordon River cruise at Strahan (Nth West cnr Tas). Heaps of wineries all over the State.
Joseph Moir's Shot Tower Channel Highway, Taroona (near Hobart) where they used to make the musket shot.
Port Arthur, now if you are staying at a hotel in Hobart then get there in the early afternoon do the tour around it and book on the first ghost tour that way you don't get back too late to Hobart, if staying close by then arrive just before midday, do the Isle of the Dead boat tour, then walk tour then have dinner and book the Ghost Tour for whatever time suits you.

check out http://www.wineglassbay.com/ http://www.tasmaniazoo.com.au/ If the missus is into crafts then arts and crafts event, the Tasmanian Craft Fair will be held during the weekend of Friday 1st to Monday 4th, November 2013 up Deloraine way (Nth Tas). There is a huge market at http://www.salamanca.com.au/ every Sat in Hobart.

Don't let the size of the sate fool you either, a couple of hundred k's can take awhile depending on weather and also the size of the roads, some are very narrow so take your time.

cheers Uncle.
P.S always carry a weatherproof windbreaker/coat in the car

Just got back from Tassie last week. Many seasons in one day with rain, sunshine and even snow at Cradle Mountain. :D

As uncle58 listed many great things to see but something not to miss is The Wall at Derwent Bridge (between Straun and Hobart). This is 100m Huon Pine panels carved into scenes that are so life-like it is unbelievable. The Nut at Stanley is worth a chairlift ride.

Regards

Mate the whole place is absolutely beautiful with so much to see and walk around the south west corner is EPIC you can do a walk were they drop you off in a chopper and you walk your way out it takes about a week or so. So much fishing n deer shooting... the first year I went there I went back three times that year... Not many places in the world I recon where you can be out on the continental shelf catching albacore and in the afternoon be on a lake catching BIG rainbows n brown trout I have got far too many stories of that place just spend as much time n see as much as ya can, you will love it :D :D :D

All the best
John

It's Gods country, just go for a drive, the whole place is spectacular. There's also a good Whisky trail as Tassies the home of some world class distilleries. Lark Distillery also does a nice Rum. If you like a good pub, Tassie comes up trumps.

I love the place, she's absolutely brilliant.

Spend a bit of time studying the old map of Tassie and I'm sure you'll find something of interest.........

In the centre about 1/4 the way down and Tassie will really love you.

Visited cradle mountain yesterday, beautiful albeit bloody cold. Also starting to realise thongs aren't the best footwear first thing in the morning
