G'day fellas.

Well I'm trying to tee up a blokes weekend in the high country in Victoria to do a little trout fishing in the next month or 2. Can't wait to tell you the truth.
I Always have time to shoot although when it comes to fishing i only know the local dams and reservoirs because time is so restricted so it gets forgotten about.

so I'm looking at a totally new set up, from rod to lure(i can't fly fish and i know it's the best for trout).

so I'm looking on advice from you keen anglers on equipment on

-rod type brand and size, once again i Can't fly fish and don't have time to learn.
-reel type and brand
-line weight
-lure type

I'd love to hear what you anglers recommend me. I'd only like to hear on mid and high quality equipment.

thanks for your time fellas

Really depends on the type of terrain you are fishing in.
If you are fishing in rivers/creek up in the real thick stuff my suggestion is:
A small 1000 size reel. My pick is a shimano stradic.
Uglystik have a few short rods. 3'6" & 4'6" 1-3kg. Not high quality or expensive but if it is thick bush they are tough & will take a beating.
Then line i would go for 4lb or 6lb fins braid with 4-6lb flurocarbon leader.

I'll leave lures to other blokes. My ones tend not to catch anything

I'd prefer to have a good reel and skimp a little on the rod if there is a greater chance of a fall & breakage.
Just my opinion.

thanks cam, much appreciated.

Thinking on bright Victoria for the location.

I was thinking the exact same thing as the setup as you were mentioning with the rod and reel. I'd like to spend more of my hard earned cash on guns and beer for the up and coming weekend.

cheers for the reply mate.

From my experience, which I must admit is rather limited, just any old lure you want to put on will work. have never had one fail. But then I only catch trees and bushes

Hey alex try some hard body lures that look like a little red fin or a smelt!! I go for atomic's! From 50mm to 65mm long! Works for me!! And give the vribrax spinners ago too!!

I think he's right  just about anything of the appropriate size will work, I catch more fish on my favourites, small rapala CD's and floating in rainbow and brown patterns 3 & 5 cm and small vibrax spinners because they spend more time in the water.
I have caught them on all sorts of lures but if things are a bit slow seem to go back to the favoutites.
Small water I fish a 2lb fish is a big one I favour a 5-6 foot rod and 4lb line,
Celtas work well and are cheap which is good when you will loose a few to the blackberries and snags.

as the others have said a small 1000 reel loaded with 4lb braid and a 4-6lb flurocarbon leader. I like shimano sienna reels -round the 50 dollar mark. I reckon a 5.5-6foot 2-4kg rod, shimano raider rods are good value but no idea on what is available in that size. Little celtas are the go they are cheap and no tears if you have to leave it in a tree. I also love the little rapala suspending lures in a trout pattern but I only use them in the slower waters
