i did a lot of fishing down lake macquarie while was at the olds, only did one trip to sea though.
brother caught a leather jacket, but that trip was called on account of being a bit "nautical" we both got a bit green,{but wouldnt admit to it]
did catch flounder, flathead, bream, whiting, squid ,red bream, niggers, taylor,a shark ,octopus, mud crab, blue swimmer crab and a few other fish varieties over the 3 months i was south.in the lake.
saw for the first time in my life blue groper in the lake.
also saw the biggest jew ive ever seen[but couldnt catch] in my life [well over 1.5 mtr]
used soft plastics for the first time in my life.[and caught fish]
truly a trip of firsts, but not a trip of lasts
sean.

Good varieties of fish getting around the Lake these days from all reports, remember when I was only a nipper, about 5 or 6, we used to stay at the old surf rescue boat shed at Pelican on the shores of the lake, I think it might have been owned by a bloke called Ray Johnson, who used to be our local baker at Merriwa.

Re: southern trip
theres tons of fish in the lake [always was for locals] but these days with out the netters,
the fish have moved out of the shallow areas i used to get em as a young bloke into deeper water.
also theres lots of big fish.
bull sharks,hammer heads,great whites,massive tayler and jew....
we caught bream, whiting and flounder on soft plastics.....
i hooked what i think was a shark at the eraring power station outlet on a 7 foot rod with the real of my beach outfit,
topped with a triple gang and a whole squid.[floating bait]
the damn thing wouldnt stop,i couldnt turn its head or slow it down AND i had the drag maxed out....damn near spooled the real before it touched a rock and broke off.
ive never felt something that heavy on a line before..... never even got to see what it was
oh well....next year.![Wink ](./images/smilies/icon_wink.gif)

Gary, I was wondering if it was you I had talked with about this before. Yeah, he was a bloody fantastic baker, still remember with slobbering mouth his Chelsea loaf that I used to get fresh every morning for smoko when I worked on the shire, I had to walk past the bakery on the way to work. My old man ended up buying a little red fibre glass boat of about 12ft from him, of course it had a Johnson motor on the back. ![Laughing ](./images/smilies/icon_lol.gif)

Re: southern trip
Sean seems we missed each other again. Growing up on the lake spear fishing sailing and swimming never saw the sharks we see now. Hopefully they help keep some people away lol.
Back then the 2hp outboard was enough to push dads fiberglass boat he built along for us to catch kilos and kilos of tailor. Used to walk along the shorr with the 6ft and catch enough for a feed come late April.
These days the olds still catching plenty of whiting and flatties and the odd squire big enough to eat. Dropping out there today with a few fishing goodies for his birthday.
