Estwing rebuild

Have a few old leather handled Estwing hammers in the shed. The leather gets dry, spacers get damaged and they become a pain to use as the grip becomes loose.
So I thought I would make a wood grip and get one back to life.
Plan on doing it like knife scales. So I started by cleaning off the rust.
Looking at the numbers on the shaft maybe a 1977 manufacture which sounds about right.
Stinking hot in the shed so not much more to show yet.

i did a knife handle in leather rings like that hammer handle.
i did the rings from two different belts. [thickness and colour]
they are easy to shape if you use a linisher on the angle grinder [or some such]
goin to look great. :D

How did you pack the leather on tight so it didnt move while using?
