Found this for a very reasonable price. A 5 hr round trip and it’s home. A complete rebuild will be undertaken and an inverter drive will be installed (it’s a 3 ph and I only have single at home)

For those in the group, not me, who aren't completely machinery savvy, again not me, could you explain the purpose of this wonderful piece of workshop hardware?

Hi Rabz. It’s a surface grinder. Used for grinding steel flat and parallel. Because the wheel spins on a vertical axis it’s commonly referred to as a wash grinder as it leaves circular grinding marks.

Sew eurodrive make 240v single phase to 240v 3 phase VSD drives. Very easy to set up. The motor needs to be changed in terminal box from 415v to 240v. Theres a few company's that make the the drives
Probably telling you stuff you already know.

Isn't star delta the difference between starting out of gear and running in gear?

Apart from the elecrical wizardry how does the bottom clamp arrangement work.
Is it magnetic or if there something missing ?

Magnetic. If I put a lifting plate on it you could lift the whole machine off it.

Yes thats Star to delta.
Smaller motors are normally star connections 415V change to delta 240v
All bigger motors are Delta connections 415.
Not hard to set up.

Bigger motors use an arrangement of all the motor wire connections run back to contactors and timers. The contactors first start the motor in a star connections than after a set time change to delta. They do this to lessen the current draw when motor is first starting. Today with the cheaper price of VSD star/delta motor starters are less used. The best way to start any moter is Direct on line but you need large power source cables. Think Portland aluminum smelter
