New Project Started

Well for some time I have been thought about building a belt grinder and even ordered the bearings to make the rollers about a year ago

Recently my son has developed a desire to have a go at making a knife or two and asked if I could build my belt grinder for him :?

Anyhow last week I ordered a motor which is about the only other thing I needed to buy other than the bearings as I had plenty of steel and ally offcuts from other projects that could be used to make this one.

Today the project started in earnest with me making the rollers and Jacob cutting up the steel for the main grinder body and some of the bits for the platen.

This looks interesting, have wanted one of those for a few years now, too tight to buy one, and too rough to make one. :D

48 or 72 inch belts?

Our projects seem to cross paths on a regular basis.

Hey Kickin

Because I am making it to suit general belt grinding I want to do, I have made it around 75mm wide belts however they are 2000mm long. As a result I am looking to make it suit 72” length belts too in case I end up just wanting to run the narrower belts or they are better suited to the knife work that my lad wants to do.

As far as projects crossing paths seems we are both trying to make all the good toys

Thanks Trev, not really any special abilities, just learn from your past projects and keep trying to do better on your next one

Nah, gave him my old ones that I had barely worn as they were too annoying as the lining was not sewn in so pull out when you take em off..... he has realised why I gave them to him now

Well the motor that I ordered last Wednesday night turned up today so very happy with the service.

As a result I had half an hour or so this evening so decided to go down and start making the drive wheel as I was able to confirm the shaft size on the motor. Started with the solid alloy top off a bollard that I found at the scrap metal shop. The same as the one used to make the tracking wheel. The wheel diameter is 4” and should give me around 2950 surface feet per minute on the belt.

Work has had me pretty busy over the past couple of weeks though got this weekend off so got a chance to do a bit more on the grinder today.

Finished off the drive wheel and fit it to the motor. Needed to cut a keyway in the drive wheel so went and saw a mate who had the required broach.

Tomorrow will look to do some work on the tracking wheel and tensioner.

Isn't having the right tools for the job considered cheating?

I’m with Rabz. Broaches are cheating.

Hahaha, I am all for cheating then

Using the broach took all of 5 mins including getting set up and packed up, gave a perfect keyway and then left me the next hour or so to have coffee, cake and chat with the mate.

Had a project last week. Read an article about Air Splitters for air rifles, so thought I will make on for the .22 bench gun and give it a go. Googled up some details and pictures and away I went. Tried it out yesterday morning. Shot 4 shots at 50m. and took it off. 4 shots in about 4 inches on the B/R target sighter box so took it off. It sure did not work. Finished off the match with some .3' and .4's in some pretty ordinary conditions.
Cheers,
Trevor.

Well got in to try and get the grinder finished today for the actual build. Was a good day working with the lad and giving him the chance to do most of the work. There will be some work remaining to clean it up and give a paint to look pretty etc. along with making the tool rest.

Overall I got it together though there are a couple of small things to get the tracking on the platen 100% how I want it though I did give it a run and it went well.

I will also probably end up going back to 2 x 72 belts as the source of 3" belts I had seems to have disappeared.
