One for the brains trust
Got a slight problem with the FIL's 30'06:
Its a Savage (cant remember model) but not Axis or 12 / Varmint.
Has a tendency to blow primers / extractor claw with anything but the minimum charges of 2208 and a 150gn pill. When we bought it from a member of "another forum" there was no extractor spring in the bolt.
Haven't forgotten who it was that we bought it from either - so will be contacting him soonish too - rifle is located in Tasmania so not easy to look over.
Haven't tried factory rounds as yet.

So how many times does it take to make a tendency ?
I cant help you mate, but it sounds a bit of a disaster, could something have been worn or broken, can the old fella send you a photo or the bolt head ?

A box of factories will soon tell you if it is a rifle or ammo problem.
Mate had issues with 7.62x39 his SIL has, was popping primers on factory ammo. It has been rebarreled and turns out the barrel slugs .306.
Firing .310/.311 factory ammo unsurprisingly shows excessive pressure, he now reloads for it with .308 pills.

I’ve stayed out of this thread as you asked for brains. However since I recognise my lack of technical ability a problem such as this would be straight to machining guru mate or a gunsmith. Think that’s a type of brainpower

Overly large firing Pin hole
Re: One for the brains trust
I agree missed. Spring missing because it was damaged or blown out from a previous incident. Tip of pin is gas cut, pin hole is gas cut or over sized from factory. All this leads to blanked primers at moderate or even low pressures. Get a smith to check it. If it needs bushing, don't fuck around and get it done to a 60 thou small firing pin size. Then you will never have an issue. I do them to 60 thou, never back to 80. Waste of time doing half a job. This is more common than people think and falsely leads one to think you have a pressure issue.

Re: One for the brains trust
So from reading brainy replies I would strongly suspect the seller knew these problems and may even know of the incident that caused them
