Just putting this out to the masses.
What sort of impact might it have? Should it be fixed or can it be left as it is without too much risk?
The pitt in the photo is about 1mm deep (thereabouts).
Will be getting a gunsmith to look it over shortly but thought I'd throw it out there for your thoughts.

Shouldn't make any difference mate, had a Roberts improved with headspace issues years ago, about 6 or seven primers let go, did the same as that, but never had one let go after the headspace was fixed, probably put 12 to 14 hundred shots through it over the years before I sold it.

Hey Camel,

My concern is that the primers are naturally gunna want to expand into the hole (possibly rupturing and making it worse).
Its a 300 Weatherby so its gunna be running full tilt.
Just don't want to end up with hot gas on my face.

thats .040" so i would have it fixed , if you were not responsible i would take it back.

might need a new bolt to fix it , or .040" off the bolt face same off the nose and set

the barrel back the same , or am i over thinking it.

It may make a difference, I don't know, probably the good fix would be to get it done as per the last post. A quick fix might be to just fill the hold with a dab of liquid steel or something like that and then flatten it out with some fine emery. Would be a prick of a job but would still work well. When I had the pits in the ruger, I didn't worry about them, though the primers did have funny little bumps on them. Never had one let go though.

The pit isn't the result of my work but the rifle is now in my possession due to poor questioning on my behalf at point of sale (over phone/internet). Should have asked for pictures at the time it was mentioned but took them on face value and let it go through (wont be doing that again).
Unlikely to be sorted as refund (based on current dialogue) so looks like I'll have to deal with it.

Hoping maybe liquid steel could do it. Will know more once the 'smith' has a look.

Go see your gunsmith. If it was me, I'd bush the firing pin and make sure I machined the pit out for the bushing.

Not this one. The big pub unfortunately.
Apparently they dont know when it happened and only noticed it when cleaning it up to send to me. Serves me right, should have asked for pictures rather than taking their description as gospel. Not really a small pit as I see it.
Oh well. Such is life.

well that is something the nongs could argue hard about.


And if there are any darker skinned members here I use that word in the joking gangsta style and certainly mean nof offence.

Other than the fact you know its there it wont affect anything ........just looks ugly.

Yep just an unattractive addition. Don't worry about it. If you ever get a re-barrel or re-chamber the gunsmith will clean it up as part of the job anyway.

Poor form on the part of the seller you should have been made aware of it and pics sent if and when the seller discovered it.Makes you wonder what other acpects of the forearm have been misrepresented

Rinso I agree with what you have said but it still doesn`t make it right.
