25 Camel

Post by Camel »

Its got a good ring to it eh? Thinking, but we all know how dangerous that can be.

I picked up a barrel the other day that is chambered for 257 Roberts, threaded for a 98 mauser action, I am thinking that it would be an easy way for me to make a switch barrel rifle on my Brno 601 308. What I was thinking of doing was getting the chamber end cut back enough to run a 257Rob Improved reamer in so it cut out the old chamber, and run in 6 or 7 mm short so I could use the short Brno action, also as I have a goodly supply of 308 brass and it would be an easy job forming brass. So it would really be a 25Souper AI. If I knocked off 1mm from the case and ended at 50 mm, that would be different enough so I could call it the 25 Camel. Dies would be a bit of a problem, but some 257AI dies cut off the required amount would do the trick. It would have minimal body taper, nice sharp shoulder and be just that little bit different.

What do you mob reckon, dreaming or good idea ?
What about running a 6.5x47 Lap reamer, with the appropriate pilot, in 3mm deeper ?
It would be nice to have a "REAL" 6.5mm cartridge on the forum. :P

This is the sort of shit that happens when Im out shooting rabbits and things are quiet, like last night.

I think Briel Jackson did something similar to what you are describing with the 25 Souper ai idea, it was in the early issues of guns and game. Can't remember what he called it though said he got 25/06 performance from a short action rifle.

As for the 6.5x47 idea, you obviously had a pretty quiet night, and I'm not sure what to make of it. :)

Based on the performance of my 6x47 Lap, I would think the 25x47+3 would be worth investigating. You could run the 6x47 reamer in then a 25 neck reamer. 6.5x47 dies with a smaller bushing would work for neck sizing.

Thanks Seddo and Jason, that's just what I need, encouragement. Ill be looking into it, have wanted to do something like this for years. Need to measure some cases, chamber dimentions etc. I reckon with the AI reamer I should be able to get away with not having too tight a chamber at the head of the case near the rim. Could get the smith to make me a bump die by running the reamer into a die blank a thou or two short ?

The 6.5 Hill Imp uses a shortened 257AI FL die to knock the shoulders back.

Seddo, you are making this a little too easy, you are a bad man.

Trev, I did think of that, or something similar, but I think it will either be 25 Camel, or maybe the 25 AV Camel. :D Corny eh ??

I was thinking that being short with squared shoulders and minimum neck would make it a 25 Gladstone.

Then I realised that the power will be lacking, so performance won't be as good as it could be, and it's not going to be to everybodies taste.

Perhaps calling it a 25 Corona is more appropriate?

Good points there Wayne, but Im not gunna name it after a bloody pommy.

and there is no way that Im gunna let Keith anywhere near it, so the Corona idea is out as well.

I think it's a great idea. I'm amazed the 25 Souper never caught on. 25 cal seems just about right for our thin skinned stuff
Cheers Malcolm
