17 Fire Ball
Guys I'm toying over a building a 17FB. Now for memory the case head diameter is the same as the 222Rem, if so I maybe able to just re-barrel it to a 17FB. Thus with a longer mag for the 222 case the 17FB cas will allow me to seat the pills out if needed..
Anyone here running a 17FB.

Re: 17 Fire Ball
I have a love affair with the 17 mach 1V which same thing basically.222 case head but 32mm long.My action will feed an M/T case smoooooooth.
The magazine length is a bonus but mine is throated for 25 grainers and I shoot 20 's at around 3900 fps.
I saw Trevort hit one with his Furball one night and it got caught on the tpp barb of a fence

Re: 17 Fire Ball
my 17machball is built on a 527 that started life as a 222 if that helps. And its fun to shoot as stated by Andrew. Last time out it scored double on a couple of distant rabbit kittens. That was also awesome to watch!

Sounds like I'm looking for a 222 then as the extra mag length will be handy. So many projects so little funds

Re: 17 Fire Ball
Pick your action carefully.
Remington had to modified ejector placement to get ejection of the smaller length case.
Sako L461/A1 don't seem too fussy. My one is feeding fine from a stock magazine setup.
Have heard of howas being used but don't know if they need mods to work.
CZs obviously work since trevort has one.
Single stack center feed magazines should feed easier.
I can check my tikka t3 223 for feeding if you like.
Other than that I know nothing but they are addictive.

Re: 17 Fire Ball
If you want it to feed from a standard mag set up don't use a Rem 700.
I have one that was a 17 Rem that refuses to feed, have another on a 461 Sako
feeds smooth as silk
I might take the Rem down to Yass at the weekend as there are some
experienced mag modifiers going to be down there.

Re: 17 Fire Ball
Skip tikka t3 too.
Prick to load the magazine since the shoulder is behind the feed lips. So you can't push the round below down easily to get the next round in.
Then the feed lips let go just a little too early to get a reliable feed. And the back of the case falls into the void at the front of the magazine so the bolt can't reach the case head.
In other words it was a failure.
Sako, CZ & Zastava (forgot them earlier) in that order would be my pick.

Re: 17 Fire Ball
I have been offered a CMC Mountaineer 222 rifle for $200 the barrel is knackered. Now I have not seen, used or know anything about them. What are they like ?

Re: 17 Fire Ball
The CMC is exactly the same as a howa.
Pretty sure someone here runs a 20vt on a howa.
If it can do a 20vt it will be fine for a 17fb.
