Can I receive some guidance please?
I've only ever had factory rifles and am interested in learning about building a custom rifle.
What components would one require for such a build ?
What is the process to achieve a finished rifle ?
Action obviously but what one ?
Barrel heavy varmint preferred what rate of twist/length for 32-40 grn projectiles ?
Dies etc ? Forming brass etc ?
Ideally this rifle for the exercise of the build would be benched of the back of my ute so weight wouldn't be an issue.

Prepare for budget creap, soon a stock will be included in other bits and pieces!

The simple reply is...

A Howa short action, Remington 700 short action or even a Zastava m85 will be a reasonable basic action for your rifle. The Howa/Remington will need the boltface altered, but any competent gunsmith can do that.
You will need a good 20Cal barrel with the right twist - which seems to be 1:10 or thereabouts.
Finding the chambering reamer can be an issue, but there are a couple floating around and I am sure that members here can put you onto one.
The gunsmith will be able to hand you a functioning rifle at the end of their work. Expect this work to cost somewhere between 400 and 500 dollars to fit barrel and do boltface. Stockwork will be more.

Cases - Lapua 220 Russian brass, necked down and fired.
Dies - 6mm PPC Redding bushing neck die set with a suitable 20cal bushing.


From here different stocks, triggers and actions add serious $$$.

I am thinking very seriously about it,
comes with everything except the scope
has options as well 6mm PPC barrel dies for both
cals 100 formed 20 PPC cases etc choice of triggers.

Is this the same as you had at the range last year or was that a 17 and different rifle?

You could also do a savage/stevens with a PPC bolt head from PTG or the CZ 527 in 7.62x39, sell the barrel and get a 20 cal barrel this will have the bolt head and magazine already to work with it. I think Zastava also do a 7.62x39 rifle or action only.

A PPC based action with multiple barrels would be nice! Just like Gary's

Just doesn't give me a fat, dunno why either.
I've got my 20 Tact shooting like stink and they are
very close in performance admittedly the PPC is a bit
faster and flatter but not much.

The PPC is a little more work brass forming and costs etc I would imagine.

No just run it through the die and fire form, the fire forming load is very accurate way to good
not to splat things, the are no more expensive than any other Lapua brass

First one, no, its the long action that has everything from 243 to 30-06 length, the second one would be the go, be warned though, you will not like the factory stock, make good fire starter and are pretty ordinary in the fitting.

I spose if you are going to rebarrel you wouldn't use the stock anyway. Boyds make a stock for the M85 short action, but I have found that they are a little short in the fore end, I will be lengthening mine and probably widening it as well, just need to get my shit together and do something about it.
