I need a decent front rest for sighting in and lad development etc, I am too tight to buy one so am going to build one
Anyone got a set of plans or even photos of homebuilt rests would be a good start.
What design features would you include?

Give Albow a pm mate he built one for me and a couple for him self

I'm building a co-axial unit at the moment but it's a lot of work. Remember Glenn's setup at Yass? I reckon bags are the easiest by far. Also thinking of a large sandbag with a BP cuff in it for a bit of vertical adjustment.

I have a set of Caldwell 'dead shot' bags which I have filled with newspaper pellets and that is fine as a lightweight option and what I currently use at the range. Pretty good for sighting in/checking zero over the bonnet etc.
Although I would love coax setup I have neither the skills or equipment to be able to make something reasonable. I was thinking more along the lines of you standard tripod type like this

James, that will work fine. The most important part is repeatability. With a 7mm they tend to jump a bit instead of slide.

The old Car Sissor Jacks make cheap front rests! and do ok for basic front rest.

Scissor jack with some heavy plate under and some threaded rod for spikes. And a plate on top for the bag to screw too.

The cheap Caldwell rest can shoot well enough think its the rock or rock junior.

bimbo, I took a couple of photos of the fine piece of engineering that I did a few years ago, Ill put them up later on for you.

Tikkenback, it is sad that he isn't coming to grace our presence this time, but hopefully the next time will see him and his youngster fronting up for another turn.

All made out of some junk parts that were out at the camp when I worked in the mallee, there is some bits from a truck tray cross members, a bit of threaded rod, some scrap square tube, and some tennis court nails that my old man had in his shed from around 1970.
