Savage Prefit Barrels

I am looking to rebarrel my 223 to swap from a sporter weight barrel to a varmint style barrel. Rifle now spends most of its time now spotlighting or at the range so something that will be reasonablly accurate.
What barrels are readily available in Australia 'off the shelf' (shooters wholesale is the only one I can find) or is it worth getting someone like TSE/MAB to make one up?
or the other option would be to buy a blank and get it threaded and chambered by a smith - any ideas what the latter would cost for a smith to do?

Cheers
James

Love the new avatar Dynamo.

Pacnor do prefits. I think Seddo has imported them previously. Not sure if he still has a US export permit for them.

He does still have a Lilja export permit. They don't do prefits, but do make a nice barrel. My smith would charge about $350 to thread, chamber, crown and headspace a blank. Not sure if the Savage would be cheaper with their simple headspace system or not.

Jason is right your avatar is cool!

If you are going to change the barrel get a match grade.

Have a look in the Herron catalogue they list a Bergara 26" SS Varmint profile in 223 for a 110 in a 1:12.
Don't know what availability or price is like but any dealer with an account should be able to get hold of one for you if the importers have them in stock.

My gun smith $180 to do all the work on the blank I sent to him. Had it back in 2weeks

What brand match barrels would you consider to be the best 'bang for buck'?
Both Pacnor and shillen prefitted to savage action would come out at just under $600 for stainless or I could go for cheaper barrels like er shaw or green mountain for around 300 is but heard mixed things about both those

Mate, I have a Pacnor on my 20/222, you would have seen the photos of the first group I shot with that, its on here somewhere. My new 7-08 has an Adams and Bennett, I think they are made by Green Mountain, the photos of its first group are also on here. Pacnor prechambered cost me around 525.00, then fitting costs, the A&B cost me 175.00 for the blank and then fitting on top of that, I am confused as to which way is better to go, the cheapy or others. either way Im happy with my results. :D

my thoughts on a cheapy is that it might be more hit and miss on getting a real shooter or not
