whats it worth?

Post by Buffy »

Guys, i'm wondering roughly what it costs to have a barrel chambered and installed?

Im thinking about getting a stevens 200 action and making a 243 varminter out of it. Probably have it in a boyds stock with a heavy varmint profile barrel, shooting 55-80gr projies.

is this a viable idea or is there a better option out there?

cheers

If you contact Seddo he might just be able to get you a prefit Savage barrel in the profile and twist of your choice.

You can then fit the bloody thing yourself with minimal tooling.

Con will be along soon to tell you all about it.

Mate it all depends on what barrel you want to use too,
While i am still looking into rebarreling for the .243 here are some of the prices quoted for a 1:8 twist.

All at 26" finish legnth.
Maddco - $520
Shilen - $620
PacNor Super Match Grade Stainless - $480

Instal, Chamber and Crown were about the $235 - $250

I think if you price one up, a trueflite will come in quite well priced. All you need is a B709 and you can get it sent direct from NZ to you in Aus. I rate my maddco 6.5mm barrel highly- in fact its a down right hummer and will probably go for another in 7mm, but the prices and reps that trueflite get are hard to argue with.

Haven't done a heavy barrelled 243Win yet ... my barrel will become a 6mmPPC.

But anyway ...
I've done more than I care to publicly admit that look like this ...
1. Green Mountain barrel $170 + postage to gunsmith.
2. Thread/chamber/matte blue a barrel ... $150-$180 (approx)

I fit them myself as I have an action and nut wrench, plus headspace guages. Some gunsmiths will refuse to do the above and insist on fitting it themselves. If you did go the Stevens route, I can talk you through fitting the barrel ... its not rocket science.

Better option ... a Howa H/B in 243Win already done, get the Boyd's you like. Only reason to get a Stevens is the barrel swap potential, if your not going to use that potential ... the Howa has a better, more adjustable trigger for a varminter and is ready to go assuming the factory barrel is upto your expectations, whereas the Stevens will need to be bought/parted-out/replacement parts bought.

If you have ambitions to play with wildcats ... Stevens/Savage all the way! If you needed a sub-0.5" rifle ... then a match barrel is also worth budgetting for. If you wanted to spend a bit more ... find a Savage VLP in 243Win on the second-hand market as the better AccuTrigger is worth it.

Peeves me no end that the local barrel makers will not offer Savage pre-fits ... but when you look at the price charged to fit a barrel ... it becomes clear why.

Also worth considering ... Shilen stainless prefits are available here for $600 and approx. 10-14 days delivery which you can then fit yourself.
Cheers...

Who are you getting to thread and chamber for $150-180 including bluing? I thought I knew, but didn't think he was that cheap any more?!

jeffk,
Good point, he may no longer be ... ask me again in a month. Then again, that blank will need turning as its 1" straight and in 17cal. Either way, not the $300 a local charges and then adds another $80 to blue.

Pacnor offer a prechamber and threading service, I think it cost me an extra 125.00 at the time of Seddos last group buy. That's for my 20/222 barrel, and if the results that I got are anything to go by, its a bloody good result and well worth it. Only had to get it screwed onto the action and the headspace done. 90 bucks well spent. :D

Thanks for the info guys! Con, I'm not interested in a switch barrel setup as this rifle will serve a dual purpose, that being my varminter and my first ever target rifle. I have never really shot targets before, other than sighting in but I'm keen to have a go at some longer range target shooting(200-300-400m). The longest I have ever shot at targets is 100m and as I said, that was purely just to sight in my hunting rifles. Long range shooting for me is around the 300m mark. My hunting shots rarely exceed 100m so, until now I have only ever needed to sight in at 100m.

This long range and target shooting stuff is all new to me so all the help is appreciated.

Cheers

Buff if you find an action and barrel I have wrench and vise to remove an oldie or add the new one. Also we should be able to borrow some 308 go/no go from klicker ;-)

I have a 200 in 223 that will be getting a 358 wild cat screwed in and a 308 bolt head.

I think for a chamber and fit between 175 and 250.
