new recoil pad for ruger

Hi guys just purchased a 77rsi MK1 in .308 its a beauty. But a bit rough on the shoulder, my howa
.30-06 seems more pleasant shoot even though it would kick more. To me they feel relatively the same weight wise so im thinking that maybe its the fact that the recoil pad is hard as a rock on the ruger any recommendations as to someone to install a new pad (someone who will do a quality job) in Melbourne, preferably west, and roughly what I should expect to pay. Good pick up, they seem to be pretty popular little rifle, cant help you with who to do a job down there, but Im sure someone will chime in. Cant you do the job yourself ? You dont really need special tools, Maybe you could try one of those slip on ones and see if there is any difference. Oh yeah, welcome aboard.

Have a go yourself. I have done four recoil pads using nothing more than a belt sander upside down in a bench vice. Just go easy as you get the pad down close to the buttstock.

Well done on finding one. Out west of Melbourne towards Geelong, try Peter van Meurs at Pro-Cal, he's a damn good gunsmith and a perfectionist. Bob de Vries at Kudu Services (far Eastern suburbs) is another great smith. Remember with a stock, you can mail it to anyone to do, so ring around for a best price. Always best you buy a pad you like and have the gunsmith fit it as well.

And harden up ... its just a 308Win. I use 220gr Sierras through mine, and they are bitey but nothing severe with the factory bumper bar pad.

You can also buy 'pre-fits' from LimbSaver and Pachmeyer but an oversized pad ground to fit always looks a much neater job.

Thanks for the replies guys I will give Peter a call. I no its only a 308 but it really seems to get to the bone. I could shoot my 06 all day long off a bench without any discomfort at all and there's bugger all difference in weight but it has a comfy pad so if I can make it more enjoyable to shoot then why not.

That is IMHO crap. That's the whole point of pre fits, screw them on and they fit,
no grinding, nothing and they look just as good.

If you decide to fit it yourself and want to try grinding a recoil pad at no cost to you,
I have a Limbsaver here you can have a go at which doesn't matter if you bugger
it as it was a mistake shipment.

FYI, Limbsaver do pre fits for 95% of Rugers. I know as i have taken
apart about 15 Rugers to find out.

Also, don't worry, heaps of people find the Ruger recoil pad rock hard
- which it is IMHO.

I purchased a Kick Killer lace on leather recoil pad to go with my IAC 1887. It didn't cost much and had a least an inch of internal padding at the butt. While I never thought the IAC kicked much the padding did soften the blow (plus it looks cool ).

I'd suggest trying a slip-on model before going to the effort of replacing the butt pad you already have. Perhaps you could borrow one to try.

I'll raise your crap with a bullshit. Just about every pre-fit I've seen has had some over- or under-hang. If the fit was always perfect, gunsmiths would use them, instead they tend to grind to fit. That's also understandable given that wood will move some.

Here's a 'perfect' pre-fit, almost custom quality on my brush gun I reckon. The factory rubber pad that came off was a perfect fit ...



And the pre-fits can't be ground down, so you potentially end up with something less than perfect. Luckily I have a high tolerance for shitty looks on the lever guns. And I store them barrel down so the pad stays in a solid form.

Well Con, knowing you probably bought the wrong one.
The information on the 'net is not correct. It only provides general info.

I have a 9 page document here collected over 6 years with a list of what Limbsaver recoil pads fit what guns
and even within brands their is some variation which is why I have a couple of options for each gun.

Gun makers do change stock manufacturers so you do get slight variations - with Ruger
being one make that has a lot of different stocks and has a bit of variation but I have
never yet not had one that was a perfect fit, even if it takes 2 or 3 pads to get it right.

So if you came to the Source of proper information (and you have known for over 5 years I distribute Limbsaver
so you can't say you didn't know), you might get the right pad for once.
Ask Joe, he's used enough of them.

Hell, I even have a pre fit pad that fitted Boyds stocks !!! LOL

Here's a question for you Nigel,

I have an old (70's or 80's) Win Mod 70 XTR. I need a recoil pad for it. I haven't been bothered to chase it up but if you have the info on hand do you mind suggesting which model I should get?

Winnies are the other one they chopped and changed stocks on
plus yours being an old model.

Does yours have white line spacers or the slightly more modern stock ?

Their are 3 pre fit pads that might work, if not, it would be a Grind to fit.

I'll talk to you later re sending up a template that you can measure it
against for the Pre Fits.

Tell me how I can do that ... when a gunshop wont fit and fiddle with 3 to get the 'right one' ... they dont want the packaging damaged.
